The DUI Coordinator serves as the administrator of the initiative and ensures that operational objectives of the grant, as well as procedural guidelines and legal considerations are followed at all times. The DUI Coordinator assists the host agency in providing statistical support for site location, formulating the checkpoint schedule, approving specific checkpoint locations and times, administering personnel hours and payroll reimbursement, and otherwise overseeing the program details. Additionally the DUI Coordinator will function as the media liaison for the Task Force Group, specifically planning and implementing a publicity and promotional campaign to include the news media in press and news conferences. The DUI Coordinator will monitor program activities and evaluate the program’s effectiveness, and will be responsible for compiling and forwarding progress reports to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The DUI Coordinator will be present at all Checkpoint Operations and work with the host agency Chief of Police or designee on procedural questions, operational needs, arrests and if a pursuit would occur, make the decision with the Chief of Police on the termination of the pursuit. The DUI Coordinator will make the assessment of the traffic flow on the roadway where the checkpoint will be held. A determination will be made with the DUI Coordinator on the pattern of how the vehicle stops will be made (every vehicle stopped, every other vehicle, every third vehicle) and the pattern will be set through out the check point detail. If traffic would back up too far( to the predetermined 600ft sobriety check point signs), for safety concerns, the check point will be shut down and all traffic will be moved through without stopping any vehicles. After all traffic is moved through, the pattern will start again as set during the briefing.
