After almost 30 years in the investment business I have actually seen and reviewed hundreds if not thousands of portfolios. The best ones are actually well organised. The building of a portfolio is similar to constructing a building. A good structure will not only be built with the best materials, these materials have to be placed in the right place at the right time and in the right quantities. In a well built house you are not going to see foundation stones near the roof, no matter how good those foundation stones are. I have found that most people understand what a good company is. They know the difference between a speculative investment and a blue chip stock. What most people don't know is how to combine their investments in a manner that benefits the overall performance of their portfolio. How much of a stock to buy, Where to place said stock. How to measure risk and decide how much risk should be taken. What a defensive stock is and how much of a defensive position should be taken, etc etc...The building of a portfolio is part science part art, Believe this or not but the best portfolio managers will confirm that it's true. No matter how much information you have it is impossible to predict the future 100% accurately. It is experience and a firm understanding of our human limitations that produces the truly successful investor.
