Lead Data Scientist

Arlington, Va, Us

Guest Researcher

Washington D.C. Metro Area

I used neutron reflectometry to study the structures of interfaces at the Ångstrom length scale. In particular, I measured the distribution and orientation of peripherally bound membrane proteins and small molecule adsorption to artificial phospholipid bilayers.

Sep 2014 - Sep 2020

Phd Candidate

Greater Pittsburgh Area

I characterized how proteins bind to cell membranes using surface plasmon resonance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. In particular, I quantified the non-specific binding of neurotransmitters to the lipid matrix, which plays a role in the regulation of ligand-gated ion channels. My work included the design and manufacturing of microfluidic devices to measure binding under flow, and writing optical and statistical analysis software in Python.

Aug 2012 - Dec 2019

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Albuquerque, New Mexico Area

I worked with two different research groups while at UNM. For two years, I worked with Dr. Steve Koch doing single-molecule biophysics experiments. This included studying the motility of kinesin on microtubules, DNA unzipping with optical tweezers, and measuring the magnetic forces on ferritin. In that group I used microscopy, laser optics, and molecular biology techniques. In my final year, I switched to an experimental particle physic group headed by Dr. Sally Seidel. There I assembled an electronic measuring station to characterize the charge collection efficiency in diamond vertex detectors for the ATLAS collaboration. In addition to the electronics work, I also travelled to the Lujan Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory to irradiate the samples in a neutron beam.

Sep 2009 - May 2012

Research Assistant

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility

Norfolk, Virginia Area

I used finite element magnetic modeling to model and characterize the field in and around a magnet used to generate a spin-polarized beam of positions. The positron beam could then be used to characterize various samples. This research was supported by National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergrads (REU), and was coordinated by Old Dominion University, and the US Department of Energy.

Jun 2011 - Aug 2011

Accessioning Technician

Santa Fe, New Mexico Area

I worked as a Accessioning Technician for two summers during my undergraduate years. Both years, I prepared samples for clinical screening, and assisted in organizing and storing the samples.

Doctor Of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Physics

In addition to my research on protein-lipid interactions (detailed above) I came to Carnegie Mellon University for the school’s broad.

Bachelor Of Science (B.S.), Physics

I majored in physics with minors in both mathematics and Japanese. I also took many courses in cell biology and chemistry, having started.

Physics

I attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (UMass) for one year under the National Student Exchange program. I signed up.
