I am a technical product owner in Singapore Airlines. My job is to plan for projects delivered by a team of 5 brilliant software engineers and 2 meticulous QAs, and used by 18,000 staff.Many product managers think their role is to translate business requirements into tasks for engineers.There is nothing wrong with being business-oriented, but it's crucial to balance these goals with the actual needs and experiences of users. It is easy to say yes to all business requirements, but if you do, you end up with a bloated product full of features that are hardly used. People often don't even know WHAT they want. Therefore, my job is very important because I need to drill down to what stakeholders truly desire, when they themselves are not exactly sure. If I fail at my job, technologists will spend a lot of time and money building unnecessary things that do not spark joy.My role as a product owner is beyond just translation. Equipped with my engineering and QA background, I ask the right questions to produce a cherry-picked and manageable scope. The result? A clean, user-friendly product that is not crammed with superfluous features. This is the hallmark of my contributions as a product owner.
