Brian Mackey is responsible for solving the most complex and pressing problems affecting MultiCare’s communities, 11 hospitals and 20,000+ employees. He leads a team of 12 PI professionals that created and embedded Performance Improvement (PI) throughout the health system to ensure our care is safe, effective, efficient and is loved by our patients.Notable accomplishments include:• Leading financial recovery effort across MultiCare to return the system to positive operating margin o Operationalizing improvements to access, OR utilization, labor management and pt. progression• Led development of PI strategy at system and facility levels• Created the strategy and is leading implementation of 44 EPIC-integrated clinical pathways to move MultiCare to evidence-based best practice• Leading the redesign of the Nursing Care Model to improve quality, reduce costs and create a sustainable staffing model using technology, virtual resources and different professions• Led implementation of new staffing models to reach 40th percentile in hours per patient

Notable accomplishments include:• Redesigned, scaled and deployed a new PI model• Implemented Value Stream Analysis (VSA) approach to improvement across all 14 system EDs o Reduced Left Without Being Seen (LWBS) across system by 23.3% o Enabled EDs to see an additional 25,000 patients in the same footprint o Improved overall ED patient satisfaction o Created staffing model to align ED staffing to patient arrivals• Designed and deployed PI training with modules dedicated to problem-solving, daily management for improvement, visual management, statistical quality control and executive sponsorship

Brian Mackey established and managed the System Performance Improvement Office, a team of 9 Black Belts, Green Belts and Project Managers that drive improvements throughout the health system’s 45 hospitals and 60,000 employees. Brian led his team through the successful completion of their work and coached executives in Lean leadership while personally leading other priority efforts.Notable accomplishments include:• Standardized and spread PI tools throughout the health system• Created Performance Improvement support resources including self-service tools and templates, micro learnings available for streaming, a mentorship program and “ask an expert” office hours• Led the Emergency Department System Collaborative to drive improvements through the EDs• Led the Readmission Collaborative to reduce readmissions and improve CMS value-based purchasing

Brian Mackey was responsible for improving quality outcomes, patient satisfaction and the financial strength of the Bon Secours Health System through the rollout of the Lean Performance Improvement methodology (i.e., Toyota Production System) across all acute care facilities, medical groups, senior services and home health markets. Notable accomplishments include:• Developed the system Lean deployment strategy and gained buy-in from executive leadership• Created and delivered a Lean training curriculum for introductory, Green Belt and Executive levels that includes classroom, online, on-the-job and project-focused learning• Developed and mentored internal Lean resources in local markets to lead initiatives• Created and deployed a labor management and optimization model (i.e., staffing-to-demand) at all system Emergency Departments that led to improved employee utilization and productivity• Implemented Lean operations in the South Carolina and Florida markets which included acute care facilities, post-acute care facilities, a large medical group and the business office

Brian Mackey led clinical and business redesign activities for four concurrent value streams across the health system. For each value stream, Brian led a diverse team of clinical and non-clinical staff in metrics identification and tracking, value stream mapping, Lean improvement activities (e.g., kaizen, A3, 5S, DMAIC) and Management for Daily Improvement. Notable accomplishments include:- Reduced the room turn-around time for the largest inpatient unit by over 50%- Reduced the door-to-provider time in the Emergency Department by 38%- Reduced the opportunity for anesthesia-related serious safety events (SSEs) in the OR by 79%- Improved pain management (as reflected in patient surveys) by 15%- Improved patient satisfaction (as measured by Press Ganey) by over 20% in all departments- Developed and delivered training and coaching to frontline staff, managers and directors

Brian Mackey provided systems engineering, continuous process improvement and management consulting services to numerous federal and commercial clients. . Notable accomplishments include:- Led the stand-up of the Commander, Navy Regional Maintenance Command (CNRMC)- Led the re-engineering of US Navy processes for the collection, analysis and estimation of costs associated with ship maintenance & modernization- Led the PEO IWS 1.0 Advanced Capability Build (ACB) Value Stream Analysis (VSA) that effectively reduced the production timeline to develop and field the Aegis combat system by 66%- Designed (using CAD) a new fabrication facility for C&C Marine & Repair- Managed a team of 8 direct reports and mentored an additional 6 junior employees- Developed $2.5M in new business

Brian Mackey provided facility planning, design and process improvement services to companies in the textile rental industry. Services provided include: facility design and site planning using CAD, design of Mechanical Electrical Piping (MEP) systems, solution development through continuous process improvement (CPI) and Lean Six Sigma techniques, forecasting of future production demand, project management and time and motion studies.
