About Brian Mayer
I have spent much of my career taking on challenges and working on hard problems. Today, in my current roles, it's no different. The problems are different, the stakes are different, but in the end it has always and is always about the HP customer. With these roles, I am given the opportunity to apply my growth mindset almost every hour of every day. I work with awesome people, have an amazing reporting chain, an outstanding team and I am surrounded by peers, leaders & mentors who are the best in the world. The opportunity to learn & grow only takes opening my eyes and listening with my ears. It could be how someone approaches tracking their time, how they lead a meeting, how they encourage and motivate their organization, how they mentor or how they bring teams together to solve problems.My career at HP started as a contractor supporting PCs in the Color LaserJet R&D lab while working on my bachelors degree. That transitioned for a short time into writing test cases to validate printer driver functionality. Then I was hired on several months before graduation to work full time as a FW developer writing an embedded web server into the Color LaserJet. After the prototype, the feature was dropped from that product and I was asked to help other engineers work on deliverables. Which turned out to be the best thing ever. I was able to meet more peers, work on more technology areas within the printer, and build relationships all across the lab. I volunteered to take on improving reliability for the FW release which brought more challenges and more relationships. I leveraged those relationships and more as I moved into product definition and working with Future Product Marketing, Manufacturing, Test, Current Product Marketing, Sales, etc... Then I had an opportunity to work with Canon R&D Labs in Tokyo, Japan defining and developing a unique product platform for a few years, that enabled building partner and international experience. 10years in I took on a leadership role owning performance for LaserJets, which ebbed and flowed over time yet enabled me to continue to work with Canon and to join ISO to work on productivity measurement standards. In parallel I lead an effort to restructure one of the test labs and after that spent 5 years as a product architect defining next generation printers. Now I have my head in HP's clouds working on Performance, Partnerships, how we mature or SW development culture, Intellectual Property, and how we bring in and excite new talent. I have a cool job....best of all I get to learn from the best.
