I have been blessed to spend most of my life doing things I love. My teaching career started as an instructor at Scout Sniper School in the Marine Corps. I transitioned to law enforcement and quickly became involved in firearms and tactics training. I stayed involved in teaching, both part time and full time for most of my career. At the same time I gained a lot of real world experience as a patrol officer, swat officer, k-9 handler, gang officer and full time rangemaster. I ultimately promoted and was a Swat, K9, and Patrol Sergeant. My training philosophy during these years was focused on helping officers make good tactical decisions and maintain their composure in intense and rapidly evolving situations. I believe a program that teaches skills and decision making in a comfortable environment, then requires the trainee to demonstrate their ability to think and function under ever increasing levels of stress provides the best results. Many programs escalate the stress level to quickly and the trainee looses their fine motor skills. This creates a training scar where the next time the trainee is in a stressful situation they will likely revert back to the same flawed technique that worked for them in training.As the Training Director at Gunwerks Long Range University I incoorperate some of that strategy into training hunters how to cope with stress, known as buckfever, in the field. I grew up in northern Alaska and my father was involved in guiding. Working at Gunwerks and being immersed in the hunting world provides a refreshing "back to my roots" feeling.
