About Brian Ruehlmann
I'd much rather talk about data or sports than myself, but here it goes with 5 personal beliefs that say a bit about me:1) I believe in the value of storytelling and communication. Stories entertain. Stories educate. Stories inspire. If you enjoy a good prank (Jim Halpert, Borat or Impractical Jokers, anyone?), I have a good story or two for you. In a business setting, there are few skills more valuable than being able to communicate complex information clearly and concisely - a skill I learned a whole lot about in my journalism classes.2) I believe data is one of the single most powerful competitive advantages a company can have today. But it isn't enough to simply have access to data. Data warehousing, cleansing, integration, transformation, analysis and visualization are critical for the ultimate impact data has. While analyzing and visualizing data gets all the attention, I take personal pride in some of the less glamorous work.3) I believe change is one of the few constants we can rely on in this world. I pride myself on my ability to adapt as consumer behavior, industries, best-in-class practices and tools inevitably evolve. At Wilson, I re-focused marketing efforts toward e-commerce, data integrity and sustainability as they became more important levers of the racket sports business.4) I believe experience shapes you, and that variety is important. Among my experiences:- proposed a bill for Youth & Government- announced college football and basketball games on the radio- written blogs and an e-book on surety bonds- studied journalism abroad for a summer in London- removed invasive plants in North Carolina on a mission trip- met tennis legends like Roger Federer and Serena Williams (and wrote product descriptions for their rackets, no big deal)- developed a product information management system with thousands of marketing enrichment data points- wrote code to analyze data on loan defaults- graduated with a master's in business analytics while working a full-time job in a different industry- married the love of my lifeSure, some experiences were more exciting than others, but I'm grateful for them all.5) I believe the best is yet to come. I work to improve myself every day, and I can't wait to see what difference I make in the field of analytics as I embark on my next career chapter.Feel free to connect, shoot me a message or reach me at bruehlmann88@gmail.com!

Sports Event & Operations Marketing Intern
I completed this internship as the final step toward the fulfillment of my sport management degree at the University of Missouri. This 18-week program tested my dedication, improved my skills in several facets, and crafted me into a more creative critical thinker and marketer. I worked on a plethora of projects, including brand activation strategies, sponsorship fulfillment reports, and various event elements. I assisted with the production of the McDonald's All American Games, an event bringing together the top high school basketball players in the country and broadcasted to millions on the ESPN family of networks. My responsibilities included designing logos, creating sizzle reels and ensuring brand activations ran smoothly. I put together sponsorship fulfillment reports analyzing the economic impact, activation valuations and any other marketing efforts of brands in the Maui Invitational and McDonald's All American Games. I learned Adobe Premiere Pro during my first couple weeks of the internship and taught the selection tour operators for the McDonald's All American Games how to use it to edit and upload videos. I also used Photoshop and InDesign to design festival maps, Pop-A-Shot backboards and various logos during the internship. This was a challenging and rewarding experience because my teammates pushed me to do my best work and leave a lasting impact with a reputable company.
Digital Content Coordinator
I researched bonds and wrote informational marketing content on the SuretyBonds.com website. Since SuretyBonds.com is an online marketing agency, it receives all of its business through online traffic. I studied bond legislature, detailed changes in bond requirements through posts on the company's blog, and conducted link-building with reputable contacts in relevant industries. I helped develop branding and marketing strategies, such as A/B testing and keyword research, for the company to broaden its impact. I also took the lead on writing an e-book (30+ pages) that served as a guide for understanding commercial surety bonds. I used Microsoft Office, Github, and Moz during the course of this internship.
Sports Marketing Intern
I ran marketing tables, coordinated in-game promotions, ensured child safety in bounce houses at Mizzou sporting events, handed out posters, interacted with fans and facilitated communication with fellow interns to ensure smooth promotions and marketing efforts. In addition, I volunteered as a public address announcer for several Mizzou sports, including women's tennis, soccer and diving. I read advertisements, announced lineups and maintained a good flow of commentary in front of 800+ spectators.
Server
I interacted with customers at a restaurant-style movie theater, using iPods to take orders and catering to customer needs to help provide a unique and positive experience for our patrons. The position emphasized the customer first, which included sorting out individual customer issues and figuring out ways to serve in more efficient manners. It was a time-demanding job with lengthy shifts on foot, yet rewarding because of the people skills I honed and developed. Serving alcohol, working registers, running trays, resolving customer concerns and up-selling were primary responsibilities of this job. I helped open the movie theater in the summer of 2012, so I experienced and fought through all the growing pains of a new business.
Sports Instructor
I worked as a coach for several sports camps for kids across the Chicagoland area during the summer of 2011. It provided valuable experience with teaching and instructing younger kids how to improve their skills in a safe manner. The job required me to devise a week-long schedule that would best use the allotted time with drills, exercises, and scrimmages that maintain youth interest while emphasizing sport safety. Camps would last for 3-4 hours per day, 5 days a week for kids in the 6-11 age bracket.
Golf Caddie
I spent more than 4 years working as a caddie at the historic Chicago Golf Club. Throughout this job, I came to understand the importance of customer satisfaction, hard work and hustle. The position gave me great experience with customer relations and handling various work responsibilities at a young age. I learned to strategically communicate and converse with professionals who were highly successful in their careers. I also learned the essence of teamwork, working with fellow caddies on the course to help find balls and determine yardages. It also tested one's dedication, as many times caddies would arrive at 7:00 in the morning only to leave without a bag in the early afternoon.
