I now provide support, guidance and regulatory oversight to a wide range of clients and colleagues over diverse projects as they relate to active substances, plant protection products and EU Regulation 1107/2009. I have also had the opportunity to develop skills and experience with respect to other regulated chemical types. My project experience includes the preparation of both Zonal and Member State specific draft registration reports and allied application submissions. I also contribute to the preparation of active substance dossiers, both new active substances and renewals. I have also inputted to numerous other projects including data gap analysis reports, literature reviews, classification and labelling as well as product portfolio maintenance tasks. Most recently I have secured 120 day emergency authorsations across numerous MS's and a related qualified minor use in the UK. An experienced Project Manager within the Pesticides Branch of the Chemicals Regulation Directorate (CRD) of HSE (the UK competent authority) where I oversaw the evaluation of Agricultural Pesticide and Home Garden products. I co-ordinated product applications which regularly involved providing oversight to specialist colleagues. I organised and presented at specialist panel discussions readily identifying the key points to be considered as part of evaluations. I assimilated specialist conclusions, drafted product registration reports and ensured conclusions of evaluations were made available to colleagues in other EU Member States. I developed a comprehensive understanding of the legislative framework under which pesticides are regulated in Europe and witnessed the evolution of this process with the inception of Regulation 1107/2009 and all the changes that have come with it. I was a key point of contact for registration personnel of the large agro chemical science companies and various consultancies, as well as those representatives of national UK grower groups seeking more tailored solutions to more limited yet still vitally important issues. I also sought to address questions raised by applicants via the 'Applicant Enquiries' service.

Various Locations Onboard Deep Sea Fishing Trawlers, New Zealand

Completed extended (6-8 week) trips onboard New Zealand and foreign crewed commercial fishing trawlers within New Zealand waters (predominantly southern ocean). These were large factory vessels producing professionally packaged product ready for export. Responsibilities were to collect independent catch effort data, details of non-fish bycatch (and associated mitigation) and biological specimens as required. Prepared detailed trip reports summarising details of trip, fishing effort, location, catch size and composition and which biological tests were conducted. Participated in detailed trip debrief with Ministry of Fisheries observer officers, compliance team members and deep water group.

Wanganui And Wellington Hawkes Bay Conservancy, New Zealand

Provided advice and support in completing applications for use of vertebrate pesticides. Responsible for the preparation of the 'Pesticide Summary', a summary of where vertebrate pesticide had been applied recently on Crown land and the relevant caution periods to be observed. Audited vertebrate pesticide control operations (ground based and aerial) including 1080, as well as pesticide storage facilites and provided observations to management with respect to compliance to relevant legislation. Involved in the training of diverse teams of field based staff. Conducted a review of the feral goat hunting programme in the Wellington Conservancy, this involved co-ordinated visits to the Kapiti, Wairarapa and Wellington Area Offices. Attended meeting of the National Possum Control Agencies (NPCA).

Chatham Islands, New Zealand

Was part of a close knit team working to protect critically endangered bird species including the Taiko (Magenta Petrel) and Parea (Chatham Island Pigeon) within the Tuku Nature Reserve. Maintained a 21 km leghold and cage trapline for the control of feral cats and possums. Oversaw and led possum monitoring as well as poison operations that utilised various vertebrate control agents including cyanide and cholecalciferol. Also contributed to the control of feral sheep, pigs and rats. Conducted a comprehensive study on the diet of feral cats in the southern Chatham Islands and prepared a summary report of the findings. Formed good working relationships with some of the island people who became good friends. Towards the end of my time on the island I assisted in the building of visitor structures.

Wallaceville, Upper Hutt, New Zealand

Responsible for co-ordinating multiple concurrent animal research trials principally investigating methods of sterilising New Zealand's no. 1 vertebrate pest, the brushtail possum. Was appointed animal facility manager. The possum facility was a valuable research and educational resource, frequently visited by students, teachers and visiting collaborating scientists. Proficient in various animal manipulation techniques including anaesthesia, blood sampling and immunisation. Pro-active in locating areas to catch wild possums for incorporation into captive colony and this necessitated regular contact with rural landowners as well as representatives of Regional Councils. In order to maintain the health of animals within the colony links with specialist veterinary personnel were formed - often as the result of work conducted outside of normal hours. Performed various laboratory techniques including hormone (radioimmunoassay) and antibody (ELISA) assays. Presented research findings at various conferences and co-author on numerous publications.
