Profile bio

About Brian Luce

I am the Associate Director and Professor of Music at the Fred Fox School of Music at the University of Arizona. In addition, I am a Yamaha Performing Artist who has performed and taught throughout the US, Europe, Japan, Korea, China, and Mexico. My releases can be heard on the Naxos, Albany, Toccata Classics, Gault, and Citadel labels. My performing includes ensemble work as principal flutist of the Champaign-Urbana, Midland-Odessa, and Johnstown symphony orchestras. I've also performed as a member and soloist with the Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Dallas Bach Society, Dallas Wind Symphony, Abilene Philharmonic, Keystone Wind Ensemble, and the Tucson Chamber Orchestra. As a soloist, I perform throughout the U.S., Europe, Korea, Japan, and China including concertos with orchestras in the U.S. and the Republic of Korea. I, as well as many of my current and former students, have been a featured artist at music festivals of the National Flute Association, British Flute Society, Shanghai International Exposition, Soka International Harp Festival, Texas Flute Society, Florida Flute Association, Mid-South Flute Society, Las Vegas Flute Club, Albuquerque Flute Association, Flute Society of St. Louis, Arizona Flute Society, and Tucson Flute Club. My discography includes the premiere recordings of works by Daniel Asia, Anatoly Boyarsky, Christopher Caliendo, William Mathias, Carrol McLaughlin, Anthony Plog, Jack Stamp, Hans Winterberg, and Galina Smirnova. I've won top prizes in the National Flute Association, Myrna Brown, Mid-South, and Kingsville International young artist competitions. My experience teaching in seven universities and colleges in Texas, Illinois, and Pennsylvania and top Texas high school and middle school music education programs led me to create novel and effective pedagogies that integrate sports psychology, bio-kinetic training, and historically-accurate performance practice in flute performance training. Beyond musical performance, I teach students and educators the use of quantitive measurement tools and rubrics to compliment existing qualitative assessment. In particular, I've developed a system of training the ephemeral musical performance aspects of tenuto, rubato, dynamics, détaché, and phrasing, among many others, through student-centered DAW project creation. Because of my curricular design, my students continued to develop their musical skills with little or no interruption during the COVID-19 pandemic mitigation that led to careers in the music industry.

Listed skills include Flute, Music Education, Teaching, Classical, and 24 others.

I am the Associate Director with duties including: curricular alignment with the UA Global-Sias University (China) micro campus, student recruiting CRM, course scheduling and room management, faculty communication methods training, executive producer of the Park Avenue Records recording label, external commercial performance booking for our faculty and students, and the development of program offerings and standards compliance. My work during the Covid-19 pandemic focused on safe in-person instruction based upon curricular assignment mitigating aerosolized particulate spread, room/hall tasking for efficiency and safety of course delivery, and the research and establishment of sanitization procedures. I also spearheaded our music faculty training teleconferencing strategies that included full use of Microsoft Office 365, developed asynchronous and synchronous pedagogies. My work led to full realization of my goal-oriented curricula that includes quantitive measurement, objectives focused on student recordings, and the integration of students’ Digital Audio Workstation product creation of MIDI designed recordings.I developed a fully quantitative assessment tool for all music performance activities in our curriculum. This assessment database is fully adaptable for numerous analytical strategies and is now establishing an AI-integrated baseline to chronicle our students' development, faculty analytical effectiveness, and overall physical/artistic skill.
