As the Operations Director I manage the administrative and technical staff as we deliver grant funded agricultural development projects across West Africa. I oversee administrative systems including monitoring and evaluation, accounts and maintaining capital resources. I have also developed local governance and management systems to increase autonomy of the local subsidiary charity and minimize reliance on overseas grant funding. To achieve local autonomy, I created a bee product supply network across Gambia, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, and Guinea Conakry. This supply network is bundled into our Market Support Programme that includes the purchasing, bottling, and sales of 3,000 liters of honey annually to the local and tourist markets. This Market Support Programme is run as an independent social business that aims to support local farmers and provide income for the charity.Additionally, I worked with the staff to guarantee their safety during the disputed presidential election of 2016. This included temporarily winding down operations, hiring guards and securing capital investments. By taking these measures, the local staff could be with their families in dangerous and uncertain times.

As Project Implementation Specialist I was posted with the Department of Rural Water Supply to work on diverse aspects of water resources management. I worked directly with the head of Rural Water Supply, the Deputy Director and the Director of Water Resources. My work included assessing the needs of communities across the Gambia and assign them to various rural water supply and sanitation projects that provided new “improved water sources” for beneficiary communities. This process included meeting with representatives from the communities, making field visits to assess populations and working with project managers to correctly identify the intended beneficiary population for each project. Technical field based work included advising contractors on borehole drilling locations, logging sediment and designing the screening of boreholes. Smaller side projects included building a database that centralized 20 years’ worth of hydrogeology data and training 20 hand pump mechanics on the installation, maintenance and repair of simple hand pumps used for accessing clean drinking water. Additionally, I represented the Department of Water Resources on collaborative projects with the United Nations Refugee Agency (survey of refugee resources and constraints), The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (provision of gardens to drought affected communities).
