This project was trying to find a link between the current patent laws and what type of cancer pharmaceutical companies try to cure. I was presented with several thousand XML files detailing the focus of drug studies and had to design and implement a software solution to mine data from the files. Working closely with the professors running the study I built a Python script that searched through all the XML files and aggregated all the data into a single spreadsheet. I worked for the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP) as their Technical Assistant. UCSMP authors the Everyday Mathematics line of math textbooks, designed for students in kindergarten through the twelfth grade, and used by an estimated 4 million children across the country. As their only Technical Assistant, I create flash applets to supplement the textbook lessons, in accordance with the specifications of the authors. This can include troubleshooting any problems with the software or hardware in the lab, giving brief tutorials on how to use our software, and providing any other help necessary to ensure that our users are able to accomplish their goals. In addition to the Macintosh computers that make up the majority of the lab, I also assist users with approximately twenty Linux computers. I am also responsible for keeping the lab image up to date. I must make sure that each computer is updated daily with any new software or patches, and make sure that any changes made to the system by users are reset each night for each of several different classes of computers.
