With a Ph.D. and two postdocs in vision research, I have extensive experience designing experiments, capturing and cleansing data, conducting statistical analyses, and visualizing and communicating stories to a diversity of audiences. In fact, throughout my entire professional life I have analyzed data in order to answer questions and discover patterns. Pivoting to a career in data science feels like a natural progression to further my skills, feed my curiosity, and produce broader impact. In April 2023, I joined Vertical Knowledge as a Data Scientist to develop exploratory and predictive analytics products. As a Data Scientist contractor with Ensemble Consultancy, I developed a dashboard to analyze, interpolate, and visualize realtime space weather data that affect satellite trajectories to help satellite operators manage launches and avoid collisions. I also designed and deployed a database in the cloud to facilitate access to space weather datasets. During the previous year and a half, I learned and used data science tools for cleansing, processing, exploring, and modeling data. I have experience wrangling large amounts of data and developing a variety of machine learning models (using Python, SQL, R, SAS, and MATLAB; examples at github.com/BrianDalton/new-tricks). With seven years of experience in deadline-driven corporate publishing environments, I am able to adapt nimbly to dynamic business requirements and timelines. In addition, my quantitative and academic background enables me to rapidly learn new content and skills. If you want to exchange ideas about data or entering the data science field, let's connect!
