I was drafted into the IT department to start development of a document control system because of IT skills and particular engineering and vendor document management knowledge having drafted the corporate procedure for McDermott Engineering (London). The work was based initially in Wembley and then rellocated to the company's fabrication facility at Ardersier in Scotland.Systems analysis developed into various areas, particularly supply chain management.

Assigned to Total as the Assistant Fabrication Engineer in the resident management team at the Howard Doris construction yard, Kishorn, Scotland where the McDermott designed North Alwyn B gas processing modules were constructed.The job involved an extensive range of responsibilities including coordination with the design team.

The client was Penn & Baudin, a deGroot company that required piping fabrication isometric drawings and bills of materials for the Britoil Clyde platform. They also wanted clash checking to be undertaken. This uncovered various system problems that were resolved and led the way for the company to deliver many succesful projects based on PDMS.A short time was spent on the project, designing the Total North Alwyn A platform before moving to one of the construction sites. Design of jackets and topsides, mainly for Aramco. Design of pipelines and various on-shore facilities including 30 miles of causeway for Berri field water injection. Work involved travel to Saudi Arabia and Dubai.

Working in the bridges office in Leeds that covered the whole UK dealing with Operation Bridguard, assessing and strengthening bridges.Responsible for supervision of team of engineers plus own projects. With mainly small projects, a considerable number of bridge strengthening and reconstruction jobs were controlled throughout all stages from survey through design and contract document preparation to management of on-site contractors working in various parts of the UK.

Started in a junior position and sponsored by British Rail through university, then working in most sections in the Chief Civil Engineer’s department leading to professional engineer qualification. Sections included: Permanent Way, Bridges (design and on-site resident engineer); New Works (stations, multi-storey car parks and other structures); Soil Mechanics.
