About Brian Kirchhoff

I design, plan, and manage data collections in a variety of countries and contexts around the globe as research director for both quantitative surveys and qualitative data collections (such as focus groups and key informant interviews). I bring fourteen years of experience working in conflict and post-conflict environments, allowing me to create flexible, customized research plans to ensure that funders, implementers, and academics receive objective, reliable data from these challenging areas. My work blends proven methodologies with new technologies which enhance overall data quality and improve the speed of data collection.I have worked on evaluations under USAID's Democracy Human Right and Governance: Learning, Evaluation and Research (DRG-LER) Activities and USAID's Reading and Access evaluations, and several other USAID programs and served as survey director for USAID's Feed the Future Zone of Influence Survey in Kenya and for Health and Human Services' Maternal and Child Health Jurisdictional surveys in eight locations in the Pacific Basin and Caribbean. I am currently survey director for DARPA’s Habitus Program which aims to measure the accuracy of traditional survey methods when compared to modeling approaches and third-party verification data in non-permissive environments. I have led research in Liberia, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, South Africa, The West Bank, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Cambodia, and Cuba. Prior to joining NORC, I was a senior research analyst for D3 Systems where I conducted research for USAID, the Department of State, the Department of Defense, World Bank, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), BBC, Adam Smith International, and other international organizations working in Afghanistan. I was one of the first researchers to conduct population surveys in South Sudan after they gained independence in 2011. Prior to this, I was a consultant and project manager at Gallup where I worked primarily with U.S. Federal Government clients and served as the on-site consultant for the Department of Defense and the Department of State research in Baghdad, Iraq.
