Hi! I'm Brian Oliu, a life-long learner and educator with over 15 years of experience in higher education as Assistant Director of First-Year Writing & a Senior Instructor at the University of Alabama. While I am no longer in Higher Ed, I am still educating myself and others: I work as the Communications Content Manager for Second Harvest Heartland, teaching people about food inequity through the power of storytelling.During my time at Alabama, I had the opportunity to teach a multitude of writing-based courses, such as first-year composition, literature, and creative writing courses. I have experience creating and implementing effective learning experiences for both on-ground and online courses. Through my role in First-Year Writing, I gained valuable administrative experience, including university-wide curriculum development, program assessment, and overseeing a team of instructors. I have also had the opportunity to work with students one-on-one and in groups, providing guidance and support on academic and personal issues. I have experience developing and running orientation for first-time educators, providing both pedagogical theory and practical assistance in the form of lesson plans, eLearning shells, standard syllabi, and classroom management. As a Story Strategist at Armed Mind, Inc., I developed engaging and impactful content that brought brands to life and connected with target audiences. I have a deep understanding of the power of storytelling in marketing, and I am skilled in creating campaigns that are not only well-written, but also emotionally resonant and impactful. I have continued this work at Second Harvest Heartland, crafting stories and strategies to inspire and educate people on the goal of ending hunger.Regarding my own writing, I am the author of five published full-length books, and four chapbooks. My non-fiction has been anthologized over twelve times, and my newest book, "Body Drop: Notes On Fandom and Pain in Professional Wrestling," was published by The University of North Carolina Press in 2021.
