The RA position offers the distinct opportunity to invest in the lives of students on campus. I have been blessed with the oversight of a group of men in different residence halls, which has included planning and implementing programs that benefit them intellectually, socially, physically, and spiritually. Encountering the personal growth of these residents has been one of the significant highlights of my college and work experience.

This summer internship enabled me to utilize a variety of areas in which I have been gifted. I was given the freedom to lead nearly one hundred high school students on a weekly basis by casting the vision and preaching on multiple texts and topics. Additionally, I wrote multiple month-long curricula to be used in small groups, which required significant research and creative ideas as well as writing. As the assistant to the Small Group Coordinator, I was able to help a church body of approximately two thousand people begin a substantive transition in how it functions and leads its people. There were a number of meetings and details with which I dealt to help facilitate the change. I received firsthand experience in decision making on behalf of many other people, and I gained further experience in teamwork in a business setting.

As a leader in a small church, I was given the freedom to make decisions and lead a group of high school students in a variety of ways. I cast the vision for the youth in the congregation and designed and implemented a variety of programs and activities that included service work, a lock-in, and a ski trip. My relationship with the lead pastor was a blessing, and I maintained consistent communication with him throughout the endeavor. Furthermore, he trusted me with the Sunday morning pulpit at one point, and I learned more about consistent preparation and excellence in public communication.

Many years playing football and growing in leadership equipped me to work with the quarterbacks at Wheaton Academy. I spent substantial time planning to coach the young men with excellence, and I required the same of them. We met before and after the rest of the team arrived, and I taught them the intricacies of the position. I also developed a mentor relationship with some of the young quarterbacks and have been blessed to speak into their lives on more than one occasion. My relationship with the head coach was quite strong, and I learned to communicate well with those in authority. As a result, I was blessed with freedom in my preparation and approach to coaching.
