About Brian Ransfield
I am a Senior Cyber Security Consultant at the Accident Compensation Corporation, where I work with the ACC InfoSec team to assess and improve the security of our solutions and services. We operate a shared responsibility model for protecting our information assets with several of our cloud service providers, Microsoft, Oracle, Atlassian, and AWS, where we are responsible for protecting out data, and the service provider is responsible for protecting their infrastructure. With over 5 years of experience in cyber security architecture and analysis, I apply the best practices and standards of NZISM, Essential Eight, NIS T, CIS Benchmarks, and other frameworks to create safe and compliant cloud environments for MSD and other government agencies.I have a strong background in threat modelling, security engineering, infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines, and software development lifecycle, as well as knowledge of SABSA, TOGAF9+, and Microsoft’s MCRA security architectures. I have also collaborated with security resources from Five Eyes countries and the GCSB/GCISO National Cyber Security Centre to develop NZISM security templates for public cloud consumption. My goal is to enable and facilitate the adoption and innovation of cloud solutions while ensuring the protection and resilience of data and systems.

Cyber Security Consultant
As a Senior Security Advisor my role as part of the CISO team was primarily to complete a security assessment for Microsoft Azure and support other members of the team by providing peer reviews and provide feedback to team projects. The Azure assessment focused on creating a safe environment for MSD development teams to build and develop new solutions. The environment took the approach of certifying “Landing Zones”, a non production tenancy, plus all the necessary resources needed to build new applications and services. The approach introduced the use of DevOps, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines and a new and improved software development lifecycle.
Cyber Security Analyst
As part of DIA’s Cloud Programme, my job was to work collaboratively with the GCSB/GCISO National Cyber Security Centre team to create a series of NZISM security templates, that will help guide agencies consume public cloud services safely. A highlight of the role was working with security resources from Five Eyes countries who generously provided insight into the work they had done to aid their agencies safely adopt and consume public cloud, which helped us form our own NZISM security templates.
Network And Security Solutions Specialist/Consultant (Taas),
My role was to provide pre-sales technical support for Large Enterprise and Government customers with a focus on cloud delivered solutions and services. As part of a team we were able to help agencies and organisations achieve the outcomes they were seeking, as a customer advocate I would provide feedback to our product and service delivery teams to ensure our products were on point. My role was to help customers select the right services to meet their needs.
Network Security Architect
My role for Datacom was to provide pre-sales, strategy and planning consultancy services, to aid and support Datacom customers consume Datacom private cloud services.I helped develop several new TaaS services designed for Government consumption, and provided ongoing assistance to help Datacom’s customers consume those services. I was fortunate to be a member of a great team within an incredible organisation where my fascination for working with leading edge technology, and desire for continuous learning was well supported.
Solution Architect
Pre-sales IP Architect responsible for designing and selling complex solutions to Vodafone customers. One of the highlights of working with Vodafone for me was being chosen to be part of the team looking after Inland Revenue. The team at IR introduced me to NIST architecture, IAAS, PAAS and SAAS and being involved in the early stages of their Digital Transformation was Such a valuable learning experience.
Solution Architect
Ericsson was and I am sure still is, one of the most amazing companies to work for. They really look after their staff, they really looked after me. Ericsson introduced me to working with firewalls and security products. I got to meet some incredibly smart people who invented and selflessly shared many of the patents that underpin the 5G mobile networks we use today. 20 years later, some of the things my colleagues predicted would happen are now a reality, things like the mobile phone becoming the wallet of the future, and how a smart phone would one day provide a reliable “something you have” solution through the use of hardware encrypted certificates, dual SIM cards and biometrics. A solution we had back then called a mobile clearing house could be used to solve the problem of identifying users across multiple trust boundaries to extend zero trust end to end, I look forward to seeing how this will play out.
