Initially supporting CADCAM designers with their desktop software (Solaris and AIX-based), and dealing with drawing file conversion and interchange with vendors, I picked up the concept of process automation via a web-based interface. Along with my regular daily tasks I set about automating the processes I used from day to day, improving my own productivity along with that of others in the team. Automation included database search, retrieve, and load, interaction with tape drives and other physical devices, and communication with designers and vendors via email and FTP. What began as an eight person team managing these conversions and transfers full time with a substantial lead time on requests, became a part-time job for one or two people, with fewer errors and a quick turnaround.I moved to the research team and began using the scripting skills I had built up to create custom add-ins for the proprietary CADDS software that designers used. This included software for assembly of aircraft parts and 3D VR visualisation. Again I worked through a list of requests, completed the code, and left myself in a position where I needed a new job to stretch myself further. Show less
