One of my primary roles in my position as Principle Package Equipment Engineer was to take ownership of a number of packages. I formed Guy Associates Ltd in 1990 to undertake consultancy and contract roles. I ceased trading in 2002, after taking a staff position with Foster Wheeler.Details of the in house consultancy and contract positions are described separately. I also provided consultancy services to a number of other organisations during this period, including the Reading University Management Unit. I assisted the Management Unit by developing a cost effective IT strategy for establishing an integrated computer network and database application, to undertake marketing and course management. I then successfully managed its implementation and over saw its operation and maintenance over a 7 year period.

I project managed orders on the FPSO Banff Project for equipment on the Gas Compression, Dehydration and Glycol Regeneration Packages. Specific orders handled included Dehydration Inlet and Export Gas Coolers - PCHE type, HP and MP Compressor Suction Coolers – Shell and Tube type, LP Compressor Recycle Cooler, Glycol/Glycol Exchangers and Glycol Cooler - Plate Exchanger type and Lean Glycol Pumps.

The company chairman invited me to join a team to carry out a feasibility study, followed by the design, build and demonstration of a Torbed portable pilot plant, to decontaminate drill cuttings for a consortium of 12 major oil companies. We also managed to get the process certified for use off shore. I project managed the design, build, commissioning and technology transfer of pilot plant to two process licensors. The applications were for remediation of refinery sludge and pasteurisation of medical waste. I also project managed aspects of a Torbed catalyst regeneration process installed in the USA. This involved travel to Cleveland, Lafayette and Baton Rouge.

I was offered a position at Peabody Engineering Ltd by the holding company Hamworthy Engineering. I project managed orders from China for Air Heaters, Fuel Trains and Waste Gas Burner Packages. I also specified and procured combustion equipment for a major European refinery contract.

I was commissioned by the managing director of Airoil-Flaregas Ltd, to act as a consultant on business and systems analysis and to work alongside Synergetics Management Consultants. My role was to analyse the design and engineering aspects of the organisation and make recommendations for improvements. Synergetics carried out the same exercise covering manufacture and production. We were then commissioned to implement the recommendations. While implementing the changes, the company was purchased by Hamworthy Engineering Ltd, who asked me to act as a consultant on their behalf and take a lead role on other tasks within the company. I continued with the company re-engineering activities and my tasks included improving change control to better manage design and production costs. Write ISO 9000 procedures (accreditation achieved Nov 93). Project manage and implement an MRPII system, including stock and product categorization, structures and variables. Integrate the different Computer Aided Design applications/operating systems and MRPII part listing system. Provide supervision, training and support for operating staff. I also took on the functional role of managing the operation and maintenance of the company IT systems.My final task was to complete the IT transfer to the holding company head office in Dorset.

I worked for Chris Dodson, the inventor of a unique form of Toroidal Fluidised Bed Technology, from which the company name was derived. We applied the Torbed reactor technology to a wide range of applications and once proven, designed, built and commissioned a pilot plant, then undertook a technology transfer to the process licensor. We won the Conservation Foundation Daily Telegraph & Natwest Clean Technology Enterprise Award. This was for developing, building and commissioning a Torbed process plant to calcine coal washery waste at the Abernant Colliery in Pontardawe.

I was part of the team that pioneered the development and packaging of PLC based burner management systems for use on Utilities Power Stations worldwide. I managed the drawing office and designed an oil burner safety interlock system, which was patented by the company. I participated in the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of the light up oil burners for the 4,000MW Drax power station second phase.

I managed a design office, undertaking the packaging of electro/mechanical equipment and PCB layout work, primarily for MoD projects. Clients included Marconi Space & Defence, Plessey, AEA Aldermaston and RAF Benson. I also generated proposals and liaised directly with the clients to win orders.

I was part of the special projects group developing novel milling applications for the minerals and mining industry. I contributed to the design and successful commissioning of a pilot plant for pulverising Uranium ore at a Gold Fields mine. I participated in the design of burners and milling plant for the 3,600MW Matla and Duvha coal fired power stations.

Johannesburg Area, South Africa

I joined a team managing major mining and mineral projects. I undertook design work on the Sishen-Saldanha project iron-ore load out station. This loads 100 tons of iron ore into wagons for transporting from the Sishen mine to the Saldanha Bay harbour. At +3780 metres, this is one of the longest trains in the world. I was responsible for estimating large construction projects with values in excess of R27 million (Approx. $200 million today).

Harwell, Oxfordshire

I was offered a public interest transfer to Harwell. My role included liaising with internal customers (scientists). My project management responsibilities were for the Nuclear Physics Support Division and encompassed activities from design layout to final commissioning. The type of work included bore hole probes, logging equipment, vacuum and pressure vessel test chambers, high temperature furnaces and silicon wafer materials handling for ion implantation equipment. I was also involved with a feasibility study on maintenance robotics for the JET project.
