About Brian Tully

Brian Tully is an Acquia Certified Drupal Developer and most recently a Lead Technical Consultant/ Performance & Security Specialist at Acquia. I have extensive experience developing web experiences and products with one goal in mind: to build high quality software that delights the end user and provides an optimal user experience. As a strong team player and user-centric web developer, I thrive in an agile development environment, but appreciate all styles of innovative project management. Over the years, I have built on my solid technical foundation by taking every opportunity to learn new technologies; as a result, I have technical skills across the complete software stack, front-end to back-end.As a Lead Technical Consultant and Performance & Security Specialist within Acquia’s Professional Services, I led the Launch Readiness practice — helping countless enterprise companies, government agencies, and educational institutions test and prepare their applications to ensure a performant, secure, and stable launch and/or high traffic event on the Acquia Platform. A notable and recent example was helping NBCUniversal prepare nbcolympics.com for the Paris 2024 Olympics. In my years at Acquia I also developed a reputation for being a skilled debugger and problem solver, where no problem was too esoteric or unmanageable — technical or otherwise. I frequently was called upon to help diagnose and treat “mission critical” emergencies.I pride myself on tackling tough technical problems with an attention to detail, determination, calm, humility, empathy, clear and respectful communication, and a sense of humor. If you or anyone you know would value these qualities and technical skills, please reach out to me! 💼 As a lifelong learner, I’m open to exploring all opportunities — technical, leadership, etc. For the past decade I’ve developed with PHP (Drupal), Python (Django), and Ruby on Rails, but really found my niche in helping customers focus on performance, security, stability, and scalability. I’ve cultivated deep knowledge in areas like load testing, application performance monitoring, Edge CDN & WAF (Akamai/Cloudflare) and site reliability engineering (SRE). I also strongly value good user experience (UX) and clear documentation (technical writing).🌎 I’m open to anywhere remote and any hybrid roles within proximity to Dutchess County, New York.⭐  I’ve previously worked at Acquia, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, About/New York Times/IAC.

  • Consumersearch (About.Com/New York Times/Iac)
    Senior Software Developer
    Consumersearch (About.Com/New York Times/Iac) Sep 2007 - Jan 2013
    Greater New York City Area
Contributed to the launch and development of ConsumerSearch.com, a top online publisher of product reviews designed to help consumers make the best purchasing decisions. In this role, I strategized and implemented methods to best accomplish business goals using a broad range of technologies. I helped build a highly customized Content Management System for the editorial team using Drupal, with an emphasis on improving workflow, publishing options and the user experience. I developed and maintained custom Drupal modules and themes to support both the Content Management System used by staff as well as the Consumersearch.com website used by the general public. As a theme developer, I developed clean, optimized markup using XHTML/HTML5, CSS, and Javascript. As a module developer, I promoted the use of coding standards and best practices. I was also responsible for Drupal configuration, administration, and debugging.I took the lead in developing a mobile version of the website that leveraged existing content and URLs in order to retain SEO strength. Additionally, I led web performance optimization efforts that drastically decreased page load time. These efforts involved: (1) tuning Apache, MySQL, and Memcached for optimal performance, (2) enforcing Drupal best practices and core hacks, (3) front-end and 3rd party optimizations, (4) optimizing SQL and Views (i.e., exporting views from DB to code to utilize opcode cache), and (5) implementing domain sharding of assets (images, CSS, Javascript) and integrating with a Content Delivery Network (Akamai). I also initiated, developed, and maintained an automated QA testing system that significantly improved our quality assurance process and minimized loss of revenue. This solution involved integrating Selenium Server along with PhpUnit and Jenkins CI.

The LifeWire service delivered "evergreen" content to top-20 web publishers. Technical work involved: Drupal theme and module development, Drupal configuration and administration, implementing and leveraging Web Services (e.g., XML-RPC, AJAX). Additionally, I coordinated software releases and helped manage quality assurance for the team.
  • The Gary Stock Company
    Senior Web Developer
The Gary Stock Company Mar 1999 - May 2007
    Croton Falls, Ny
Supervised, maintained and implemented all web development projects. The two most significant sites I developed were for Porsche Cars of North America: porschedealer.com and pcnasource.com. For Porschedealer.com, I conceptualized and developed a Porsche sponsored system for creating/maintaining individual dealer websites, which was launched in 2002. A main area of focus was on corporate identity compliance, i.e., the "look and feel", so close attention was paid to designing pages/modules that adhered to Porsche style guides, allowing individual dealers to customize their sites within constraints. This was handled by developing our own content management system and template engine using Open Source technology (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). I also developed and implemented several automated web services allowing Porsche and external providers to send inventory data feeds that were parsed and assigned to dealers. porschedealer.com has been successfully running since 2002 and has received constant praise for its reliability and ease of use.pcnasource.com was launched back in 1998 as Porsche Cars of North America's secure intranet and learning portal for all its North American dealers. Originally a repository of product knowledge, it later was expanded to handle certification of its sales force via monthly certification tests administered online. I helped develop and expand the testing engine (Perl) as well as define and write the code that handled the certification logic and reporting. Over the years, the system was expanded to support other job roles (AfterSales, Technicians) as well as other learning modalities such as web-based training and workshops. Given the growth of the system, I recommended and implemented the migration from Perl to PHP. I developed a training enrollment module that allowed administrators to define courses, schedule events and handle enrollments. Looking back, we essentially custom built our own Learning Management System.
