His micron count was 16.9 with a 99% comfort factor. His first crop of lambs will hit the ground in April 2023. Our 400 pounds of wool is spoken for (at $10/pound) before it’s sheared. With a little bit of marketing, you too can expect a good price for your wool. We are Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance certified, we practice climate-conscious farming by capturing carbon and reapplying it to our fields as natural composted fertilizer. We assure humane handling of our livestock and have an established relationship with our large-animal veterinarians. Basically, our efforts are identified as sustainable farming practices. We like to call ourselves stewards … of the sheep, of the land, of the farm. We are here, on earth, for a short time. As stewards, we pledge to care for our little chunk of paradise… and we will leave this place better than when we found it.

As many of my friends and colleagues know, I am a chicken wrangler and run the Chic Hotline from my home. Since the 1980s we have raised chickens, turkeys and ducks on the farm and I have had the privilege of knowing and working with poultry judges, state and federal poultry regulators/veterinarians and poultry industry experts. My experiences have provided access to high ranking officials and most importantly, 4-H parents. I answer questions. The Chic Hotline is a private consultation at no charge for poultry parents who need some quick advice, be it "call a veterinarian, or wring its neck and eat it." Over the years we've dealt with stuck eggs and influenza outbreaks. If I get a call it might be someone wanting to shoot, shovel and shut up...(I'll talk you out of that) or someone looking for fancy hens to show at the county fair. Every call is different and every call is important. The Chic Hotline can set you up with a hen house palace and make you feel better if you're using a dog house. We talk about bio-security and food safety, as well as vermin control, hen pecking and imprinting. It's all so fun!This winter we have expanded our horizons by offering a winter get-away for urban farmers' hens. Let's face it, it's no fun going outside when the water freezes and the hens aren't laying. Leave that to me. I'll pick up your hens, house them and keep them for four months (December through March) and return them (or a replacement - see the small print in the contract) in laying condition, ready to be your friend through the summer. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development/ Animal Industry Division conducts surveillance for/ and controls/eradicates infectious animal diseases in Michigan. A number of these diseases are zoonotic in nature (which means people can contract the disease from animals), including bovine Tuberculosis (TB), BSE, Avian Influenza, Rabies, Lyme disease, West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. This position communicates the risks associated with disease, how the eradication efforts unfold, and what MDA is doing to assist livestock producers in recovery activities associated with disease outbreaks.The position requires interagency communications with the Michigan Departments of Community Health and Natural Resources and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Veterinary and Wildlife Services, as well as stakeholder communications where multiple organizations are involved in disease response, control and recovery efforts.

This is a MDCH position with funding and duties shared between MDCH and MDA. The MDCH portion of the position (50%) remains the Bovine TB Coordinator position, responsible for coordinating the interagency response to the Bovine TB outbreak in Michigan’s deer and cattle populations. The MDA portion of this position (50%) will lead the education and outreach effort regarding the new requirements for electronic ID in Michigan cattle, and act as the interagency zoonotic disease liaison with responsibility to lead interdepartmental communications, public education and outreach, for avian influenza and any other disease that may affect both animals and humans.

• Coordinate Interagency Bovine TB Eradication Program • Assist in the development of policy• Promote changes in agricultural practices that will reduce the risk of livestock becomeing infected with bovine TB from wild deer• Develop and Coordinate conferences, make presentations and analyze scientific, technical and medical terms to both lay and professional groups for the Bovine TB Eradication Project.• Create and distribute information to hunters, farmers and the lay public regarding bovine TB strategies implemented to eradicate the disease.• Coordinate monitoring and reporting systems to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of the TB eradication project.• Prepare and distribute news releases to media representatives and other interested parties, create brochures and newsletters, manage emerging diseases website.• Additional responsibilities for development and implementation of strategies to minimize bovine TB in Michigan.

Acted as the interagency communications coordinator for the Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication Project. Coordinated the Emerging Diseases website development project with the partners below.Project partners included the Michigan Departments of Agriculture, Community Health, Natural Resources; USDA Veterinary Services and Wildlife Services; and the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine and College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
