As a volunteer with the Health Department, I am tasked with carrying out program goals listed in the Marine Recovery Area (MRA) Communications Plan. I have created and delivered a PowerPoint presentation promoting environmental stewardship to community groups in the MRA. I have also partnered with Two Waters Arts Alliance and the Key Peninsula Middle School to produce a mobile, educational, art piece made out of upcycled materials. This art piece will travel around Pierce County in hopes of passing the important message of environmental stewardship along. We encourage people to make the connection that we are all connected, and our positive or negative actions always have a reaction.Prior to becoming a volunteer at the Health Department, I was an intern. I conducted the field work aspect of a study that was being done by a doctorate student at Washington State University. Each week, I would collect 6-7 water samples, 20 mussels, and deploy and retrieve a resin-containing SPATT disc to measure if the amount of toxic algae present in freshwater maintains concentration once it reaches marine water. I was also a large contributor to the formulation of the Marine Recovery Area Communications Plan. Attending program planning trainings was something that I did quite regularly during the internship; this has improved my networking skills.

In the early years, I was responsible for counting in/out my register and processing transactions correctly to avoid errors; this emphasized my strong attention to detail. I also worked with my co-workers to ensure daily floor positions were always filled and the store was constantly looking presentable for our customers. About midway through, I took on the lead role of the Merchandising team in addition to remaining a cashier. I was in charge of setting up displays that were appropriate and had selling points. It was also my responsibility to manage the new inventory that was shipped to us from the warehouse. It was important to disperse and represent the new merchandise within the used merchandise effectively. Training new hires was a large component of my job at Buffalo Exchange. I have always been very passionate about providing great customer service, so I had the opportunity to show those new to our company the ropes. We would go through a broad range of scenarios to get comfortable with how the store runs and how to handle negative situations. As Buffalo Exchange evolved to POS systems, it was important that the new employee knew the ins and outs of using that kind of programming system, so I they would shadow me and vice versa until they felt good about being on the register. This job has really allowed me to strengthen my sincere passion for working with people on so many different issues; whether it be retail, service, sustainability, or health matters. I appreciate thorough communication and the ability to participate and contribute to a team environment.
