About Jack Britton

I am a dedicated aerospace engineering student at the University of Florida, driven by a passion for innovative design and problem-solving. With hands-on experience in CAD design, simulation software, and modern manufacturing techniques, I’ve led projects that optimize aerodynamics and system integration. As the Chief Mechanical Engineer for Solar Gators, I manage key subsystems for our solar-powered car, applying advanced tools like SolidWorks and Star-CCM+ to deliver high-performance results. I’ve also contributed to cutting-edge research in supersonic flow, achieving Mach 1.8 in nozzle design for academic integration. I’m actively seeking opportunities to apply my skills in aerospace and mechanical engineering to real-world challenges.

Jack Britton Work Experience Details
  • Solar Gators
    Chief Mechanical Engineer
Solar Gators Jul 2024 - Present
Responsible for overseeing the technical development and manufacturing of the Aerobody, Structural, and Auxiliary subsystems for a solar-powered car. Lead and contribute to system design and manufacturing, while also coordinating the interplay of vehicle systems.Communicate with subsystem leads to manage project development and timelines, applying industry tools like SolidWorks, Star-CCM+, and Ansys, and leveraging modern manufacturing techniques such as composite work and 3D Printing.
  • Solar Gators
    Aerobody Lead Design Engineer
    Solar Gators Aug 2023 - Sep 2024
Joined the development of the aerobody for our future solar car. I found the modelling and simulation process we were using clunky, so I rose to take charge of the design and development. I led three other engineers in simplifying our existing CAD in SolidWorks and establishing a testing process using STAR-CCM+ and HEEDS MDO.HEEDS is a new software I discovered and integrated into the old design and simulation process which enables us to iteratively test hundreds of combinations of sketch-level parameters. The process automates applying these changes to the CAD model, importing that to STAR-CCM+, running the CFD, and saving those test results. This achieved a 9% drag reduction on the car.Used a CNC to cut layers of foam as a mold of the car's geometry for composite layup.
  • Solar Gators
    Aerobody Project Engineer
    Solar Gators Sep 2022 - Aug 2023
    Gainesville, Florida, United States
Integrated into a sub-team of about 10 engineers working on manufacturing our solar powered car's carbon fiber aerodynamic shell, or aerobody. Assisted various projects and manufacturing related to improving the team's third car, such as wheel fairing mounts and electronic isolation.
  • Mechanical And Aerospace Engineering At The University Of Florida
    Undergraduate Researcher
Mechanical And Aerospace Engineering At The University Of Florida Oct 2022 - Present
    Gainesville, Florida, United States
Independent research under Dr. John Abbitt, UF MAE, Gainesville, FLInvolves myself, Dr. Abbitt, and two other undergraduate engineers in designing an assembly which attaches to existing air tanks to accelerate discharge flow to supersonic speeds and generating shockwaves. Our current prototype achieves Mach 1.8 flow, as recorded with pressure taps and isentropic flow equations. We use SOLIDWORKS for CAD design and flow simulations, and an assortment of 3D printing, waterjet cutting, and milling operations to manufacture the parts.
  • University Of Florida Honors Program
Vice President Of Honors And Aprons
University Of Florida Honors Program May 2023 - Present
    Gainesville, Florida, United States
I collaborate with a team of 5 officers to run the club. Honors and Aprons is centered around "Cook-Along" meetings, which consist of cooking food from scratch which relate to that meeting's theme. My current responsibilities include planning themes and recipes, and leading the meetings, as well as managing and supporting other officers in their own responsibilities.
  • University Of Florida Honors Program
    Treasurer Of Honors And Aprons
University Of Florida Honors Program May 2022 - May 2023
    Gainesville, Florida, United States
As Treasurer, I managed our organization's budget, filling out purchase requests and ensuring we had all ingredients purchased and brought to each Cook-Along. I also had to scale our recipes and figure out appropriate quantities of everything to purchase.
