Professor Of Fisheries ScienceVirginia Tech Nov 1994 - Mar 2019I conduct research, teaching, and public outreach in all aspects of fisheries science. My focus is on the sustainable management of fisheries: domestic freshwater recreational fisheries; and international subsistence and small-scale commercial fisheries, particularly as they are impacted by hydropower development. Research and management advising has taken me to Brazil, China, Cuba, Mexico, and Nicaragua. My secondary emphasis is on research and teaching to improve higher education in natural resources. I teach within Virginia Tech’s “Future Professoriate” program, and produced a uniquely formatted textbook that utilizes case studies to actively engage students in constructivist learning about global fisheries problems. I spent 6 months as a Fulbright Teaching Scholar in Mexico, and I have taught study abroad courses in Belize, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Panama. Presently my major international efforts focus in China, where I collaborate on fisheries research and present occasional seminars and workshops at a broad range of institutions and management agencies. -
