My name is Brooke Hill and I am a senior at the University of New Mexico pursuing a dual degree in English and Marketing. When I first began my college career four years ago, to say I was lost would be an understatement. I began college as a nursing major. To me, college was always something in the far future, something I never truly needed to think about or worry about until college became my present. I settled on Nursing because I knew it would give me a good and stable career. I also knew I loved helping people and that was the most obvious way I could think of. I felt pressure from my parents to choose a career they would agree with. I wanted to become a nurse to please those around me and never stopped to think about what I was doing to myself. My sophomore year changed that. I began taking nursing courses beyond just prerequisites and slowly began to realize just how miserable I was becoming. I knew I could not stay on the path I was on. It was then I decided to do something entirely for myself. I began to weigh my options and think about what I loved and what I could spend the rest of my life doing. I knew I loved to write. I had been writing a book for about two years at this point and had fallen in love with the art of storytelling. I knew I loved my English classes and I knew I loved being creative. So I told my mom I was going to be an English major She told me that I have to do what makes me happy but in the same breath also told me she has to worry about me and my future now when she never had to before. That was nice to hear, especially since I was already standing on shaky legs over my decision.Once I switched my major I was faced with yet another decision about my future. I had to pick a minor. At the time I was debating a career in book publishing and I knew a minor in business would complement my English degree exceptionally well. Somewhere along the timeline, that idea snowballed into what is now my second degree in Marketing. I no longer want to work in the publishing world but I do plan to publish the book I am still writing. I am also starting a business with my best friend, where we plan to design and hand-make our own clothes. Through trial and error and nearly four years of self-discovery, I’m extremely proud of where I find myself today and I am excited for what the future will bring me. Whether that is five or ten years down the line, I can not wait to see where my life and professional endeavors will go.
