Magistrates are unpaid volunteers who hear cases in courts in their community.All criminal cases begin in a magistrates’ court. Magistrates grant bail, remand people in custody and issue warrants. Magistrates deal with minor crimes and can give punishments, including fines and prison sentences. Family Magistrates deal with a variety of cases relating to children, child protection, family breakdown and other related issues. Cases heard by magistrates in the Family Court concerning children are either matters of public law or private law. Magistrates also hear some civil cases

Midlands Region

Membership of the Regional Leadership Team, training and assisting other members of the magistracy with the use and application of technology. This includes supporting their local leadership magistrates to ensure magistrates adhere to the relevant Guidance and Protocols applying to the Judiciary in respect of data protection and IT security.

Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire

Interviewing candidates and making recommendations to the Lord Chancellor about who to appoint to the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Benches as Justices of the Peace (Magistrates).

Chairing the Nominated Committee Members who deal with conduct issues for Magistrates in the Midlands Region

East And West Midlands

Vice Chair of the Midlands Region Committee responsible for investigating misconduct and advising on other issues affecting Magistrates, including removal, retirement, transfers and sitting levels.

Representing members of the pension scheme of 14 police forces administered by XPS. The Joint Police Pension Board assists the Scheme Managers by providing an overview on:a. Policies and Proceduresb. Performancec. Governanced. Risk.The board also reviews the efficiency of the scheme, the administrators’ performance against the Service Level Agreements and investigates any failures.

Crimestoppers mission is to provide a means to detect, reduce and prevent crime through the provision of information about crimes and criminals to the law enforcement agencies from anonymous sources.I Chaired the County Committee of this charity and worked together with partners to:◾Promote the phone number – 0800 555 111 – to ensure that everybody is aware of the anonymous service we provide◾Encourage people to give information about crime to us, through the phone number or online◾Pass that information to the right law enforcement agencies, in a timely manner, to a high standard, that meets their objectives◾Help to reduce crime by running projects and campaigns in communities most affected by crime.◾Reassure the general public, by increasing the number of criminals detected due to information we receive, and by engaging them in our campaigns and activities◾Fund, run and administer the charity to the highest standardsI retired from this role on becoming a Magistrate to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest.
