From a middle school social studies teacher to Director of Professional Development at Herff Jones, education has guided my career. I believe that successful professional training starts and ends with the same ingredients as a successful classroom: connection and creativity. While comprehensive programs exist for teaching sales skills, seeing them as more than a trade gimmick requires recognizing them in our everyday encounters. Seeing the "need behind the need" sounds great in concept, but it requires intense listening, avoiding a rush to rapid solutions, awareness of our reactive instincts, and any thought that talking means controlling. Sales skills are life skills, and making that connection with creative training can make the difference in their successful application to a given product.After almost 30 years with Herff, I stepped away to travel, read a few books, and clear my head. Of late, I've re-entered the classroom, keeping my skills sharp teaching marketing and, of course, history. I find myself refreshed and ready to use the skills I've cultivated to help a new generation of professionals find their voice. I hope that my next venture will allow me to create new content and generate learning opportunities that will help companies reach their full potential.
