He's able to lead the discussions on technical issues and has good instincts for where problems may lie and potentially fruitful areas of investigation. This also makes him very effective at communicating issues across the team, thereby reducing individual communication overhead, and aiding productivity. Bruce has a very strong theoretical background and detailed knowledge of many areas of computer science and software engineering. He clearly takes time to learn about different development and management methodologies, and keeps abreast of advances in these areas. Rather than rigidly applying techniques from a book, however, he prefers an empirical data driven approach to determining what does and doesn't work in a given situation for a particular team. Bruce is very personable and universally well-liked and is able to nurture a strong sense of ownership in team members which drives high levels of engagement and self-motivation. Based on his experience and demonstrated expertise in implementing solutions and managing teams, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him for both senior engineering and senior engineering manager positions."
