Collaborated with another student to research two distinct microbiology projects. 1. Examining the iron-reducing capabilities of various obligate anaerobes obtained from hot springs• Worked extensively in an anaerobic chamber to culture iron-reducing thermophiles• Leveraged energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) coupled with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to detect iron reduction• Processed soil samples from hot springs to obtain DNA, PCR amplify the 16S rRNA gene, TOPO clone products, and sequence and store resulting colonies. Utilized MEGA5 software to align sequencing results to known species' genomes.2. Produced mutants of two different strains of Shewanella through transposon mutagenesis in an effort to eliminate production of surface polysaccharides, a key factor in these species' pathogenicity.

• Worked in the lab of Dr. James Anderson to study the expression of skiv2l2, a component of the TRAMP complex that plays an integral role in the degradation of RNA. • Constructed 2 plasmids to transfect into mouse neuroblastoma cells. Subsequently used these cells to perform a dual-luciferase assay to determine whether the skiv2l2 3' untranslated region regulates expression of the gene itself.
