About Bryan Griffin

Better bio here: https://BryanGriffin.com Commercial internet pioneer in '93, creator of GUIs on PCs before MS-Windows or Mac, AI engineer before 80s boom, etc.i.e. Entrepreneur&computer scientist with long history of inventing or accurately seeing the future of technology and biz, perpetually waiting for the world, hardware, and investors to catch up.1993: Bootstrapped 1st company to do an e-commerce transaction via web, Cyberspace Development. It put stores online &taught the world net marketing&commerce by example. Its mostly lost in the early unarchived history of the net, along with the first web based app store with a sample product I wrote: TIA, The Internet Adapter. (software now obsolete that aided a shift from archaic text browsers to the GUI web which enabled the net's growth). Internet World said: “Best new break-the paradigm Internet software” and Wired: “TIA is as close to magic as a graphically deprived net.user can get”. The intent was to fund bigger ideas, like Netscape's (Mosaic's) bplan before they had it, ideas like Amazon, Wikipedia, Facebook, etc, but it provided insufficient revenue.1991: prototyped online newspaper, to interconnect them and kickstart a commercial internet 2 years before the NSF allowed commercial Internet traffic. Set aside, seeing industry of dinosaurs that still don't “get it”. One revenue stream was to be selling “books in print” as the likely “killer app” for online commerce.Independently conceived in early 90s: collaborative filtering&recommendations, blogs, social media, affiliate&viral marketing, data mining&ad targeting, extension language for browsers&servers, and more before&since this space is too small for, some still don't exist. The world is ready for ideas I had in early 90s that still don't exist. Amazon, Wikipedia, Facebook and others got to part of my early vision of the net's future I lacked capital to create, but not all.

Enabling the net's collective wisdom to create better information and steer it to those most interested. That is intentionally cryptic and will remain so publicly until launch. It'll begin with a simple bit of functionality that is merely the tip of the iceberg of what it will become, evolving towards that goal (and beyond) over time. Ideally this will become as ubiquitous among internet users as things like Twitter and Facebook are now (whether those should be, or will continue to be), though different in function.

Some sample contracts done while trying to found 1st company:Apple Computer, Advanced Technology Group, Cupertino, CA.April-May '91: In C++ on a Macintosh, built fieldable prototype of Eager, an AI system for automatically programming repetitive tasks by example based on watching everything a user does in an application and popping up when it sees something it may be able to help with. Based on an a LISP demo. Apple only needed it for one application, Hypercard, I generalized the program to make it easy to describe other applications using a knowledge base. The Apple researcher published about it, including a chapter in his book "Watch What I Do", which happened to document it as 15,000 lines, in 2 months. InfoNow: Boulder, CO InfoNow developed disk based stores for MS-Windows that contained encrypted software customers could purchase and install immediately, which were included with some IBM and Gateway machines.June-July 1993: Developed code to allow users to "Test Drive" software stored encrypted on their disks or CD-ROM. When the test drive is activated with a key, patches to the OS make it appear as if the product is actually installed normally on their disk. The product remains encrypted except for a limited number of test drives. Microsoft expressed an interest in licensing the technology.Nov. 1992 - March 1993:In C and assembler developed most of the GUI system to allow users to browse information about software they could purchase from the disk or CD-ROM store. Developed features to encrypt the program running the store and decrypt it on the fly, and other security features to prevent products being stolen. July 1989 - Jan. 1990: US West; Denver, Co.Developed decision support expert system in C++ and Clips rule language, tied to Ingres database with embedded SQL. Jan. 1990- May1990: McDonnell Douglas Communications; Denver, Co.Autogenerated C++ and SQL code for permanent object storage for distributed CAD app&more

Applied AI research for varied projects, usually a small part of larger programs. MM didn't continue funding if a relevant government contract didn't appear, which did provide exposure to varied problem areas. Samples: With a partner, prototyped a decision support system (GAMMA) for use in strategic planning and analysis of future ground operations for space launch vehicles, allowing exploration of varied investments, tech, cost and throughput. MM received a NASA contract for it.Responsible for problem selection/definition, system concept, functional specification, implementation, marketing demonstrations, and design of a fieldable system based on feedback on the prototype. GAMMA was built on a LISP Machine workstation, using AI techniques and my own novel GUI toolkit. It was very well received in demos to AF Space Division and Aerospace Co. personnel as well as NASA (JSC, MSFC, and KSC). It was included in MM proposals such as those for Space Station and a new launch vehicle.Explored creation of new techniques for model-based reasoning about physical systems for use in both fault diagnosis and the automatic planning of input values to reach a goal system configuration state.Developed a fault prediction/fault isolation demonstration for the communications subsystem of the Flight Telerobotic Servicer being designed for NASA/GSFC.As part of a NASA/MSFC contract to develop a prototype Space Station power system, developed a system to decide the priority of scheduled loads to be shed in the event of a power drop.In a team of three, evaluated and reported on opportunities and estimated cost&benefits for the use of AI techniques in a MM manufacturing facility. Performed requirements analysis for scheduling system. Then no funding. A pet project I tried to launch was intelligent CAD to integrate all the stakeholders in the design process, e.g.: design for functionality, reliability, repair and maintenance, cost, etc., too separate then.

In a startup, led the development of a GUI authoring environment for the design and creation of courseware in a team that grew to 6 engineers. Computer based course material was integrated and overlaid on interactive video (using videodiscs). The company used its authoring system internally for contracts. This was begun before the Mac and MS-Windows came out and was pushing the limits of early PC hardware. I created software tools to construct a system that could rapidly grow and evolve as needs changed, including a framework for creating GUIs (with overlapping windows, which use more resources, MS didn't pull that off until Windows 2 in 87). The focus of the company was courseware so it was decided not to pursue that as a product, although even MS Windows 1.0 wasn't released until Nov. 85. I designed a persistent object storage system for C, independently inventing the concept, which was briefly marketed as V-File in 84 as the first commercial persistent object system, 16 years before JDO (Java Data Objects) and then Hibernate popularized the concept. At the time the PC operating system, DOS, didn't have virtual memory, so at the time it also provided the utility of software emulated virtual memory in addition to object persistence.I created an object oriented layer for C with inheritance prior to any public release of C++ or Objective-C, independently conceiving the concept. It also included some novel features that differ from their approaches. I'd had to restart development of the project from the ground up, taking over from CMU prof had tried using at the time traditional non-object oriented approaches that I knew wasn't the right path. The company was partly funded by CMU and started out in offices on campus. The long term goal was to eventually get into advanced technology like intelligent tutoring, but PC hardware wouldn't be up to the task soon, so I decided to find an applied research environment with higher end hardware.
  • Carnegie Mellon University/Robotics Institute
Research Assistant, Ai & Software Development
    Carnegie Mellon University/Robotics Institute May 1981 - Dec 1982
    Greater Pittsburgh Area
Varied projects for the Robotics Institute and Computer Science department. Worked on the design and implementation of a knowledge representation language, and a multi-user distributed database for caching its information. Worked on adding semantic checking to a syntax directed editor, and implementing a version of EMACS in LISP. . I decided to pursue real world projects and leave the academic world, rather than develop systems that weren't targeted for real use but also weren't dealing with long term issues like how to create a true AI.
