This is a valuable opportunity for undergraduate students to learn material not offered in classes, and for graduate students to contribute their expertise and gain experience in outreach and mentoring.
Cal Teach Intensive Summer Intern
As a UCSC Cal Teach Summer Intensive Intern, I spent a week under the supervision of mathematics teacher Mr. Emmanuel Olveras-Garcia at Alisal High School. The Cal Teach program works closely with Alisal High School since it is classified as a rural area with urban city issues. This helps expose summer intensive interns to the challenges that STEM educators face in these low-income areas.By being able to work with students in all all periods of the school day, I was able to put my past skillset as a college level SI Leader to use in a completely new audience. By the end of the week long intensive internship, I had been able to teach my own class lessons solo, I worked with a classroom of entirely non-english speaking students, and strengthened my communication skillset as a STEM educator.
