opportunitySPACE is a civic technology startup based in Boston, Mass. specializing in revitalizing underutilized public real estate assets by making them available to community members. Work with this innovative company required a holistic view of community real estate development, and helped to solidify connections between development and neighborhood wellbeing. Eventually, tasks became more centered on interfacing with city governments in order to onboard them into the marketplace platform.

During this time assignments focused on design for neighborhood centers around Cleveland. Firsthand experience of a city’s rebirth and attending the Global Forum for Business as an Agent for World Benefit held many learning opportunities and meetings with bold actors. Fallow Space began to take shape during this time.

As a non-profit, working with MIIM Designs opened the world of humanitarian design. Design work included small dwelling units created for the UN-Habitat to present to Rio+20 and a park in Accra, Ghana, the first of its kind in the region.

By creating an entirely new phase of design called Discovery Phase in between Programming and Schematic Design, OPN was able to create a high fidelity Revit model of an existing building for a Fortune 500 company. I was with the team with all aspects of this model’s creation. This lead to a greater understanding of construction methods and their representation within a Revit environment.

Working in a small firm allowed for opportunity to work on all levels of project development. The studio’s specialization in luxury homes provided a fast pace work environment and insight into challenging permit acquisition.

Students requiring help with new technology or locating research materials visited the desk for assistance. As a result, the positioned offered the chance to become proficient with academic research methods. Participation in the Parks Library Computational Advisory Committee gave insights into institutional management of money and priority setting.

Responsibilities included clearing out studios for the summer, painting, and upkeep of the College of Design facilities. The position offered a great deal of insight into the way in which buildings can support maintenance through design.

Assisted in daily activities of a small photography studio. Performed Photoshop edits including color correction, touchups, and the creation of unique photo enhancements.
