Over the time we have been adapting our approach to problems to increase our use of automation and make our builds repeatable. I have also been heavily involved in the delivery of several key projects during this time. Namely:• The rollout of a Teams Voice Pilot using Direct Routing to 250 users within IT and Student Services.• Migration from the On-Prem AAF Shibboleth IdP to the AAF Rapid IdP service, integrating with AzureAD. • Migration of several disparate AD Integrated DNS Domains to a consolidated IPAM solution on InfoBlox, without disrupting AD Domain Services.• In-place upgrade of our Azure based Finance System fleet from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2012r2. • Building out a Cloudflare and F5 LTM based proxy layer to our Azure based critical applications.• Conducting an audit and planning the remediation of our F5 BIG-IP Appliances, Physical and Virtual.• Designing and building the Azure and InTune infrastructure to support the rollout of over 600 Teams handsets across the University.• Working with our partner on the migration of 700 Staff telephone numbers to Teams Voice on Operator Connect. For the period of a little of twelve months, I was seconded into the role of Manager Systems Engineering, a newly founded team where I was responsible for three staff. This was an interesting and challenging time as the team shifted to home-based work during the early days of COVID. As well as providing technical advice to line and senior managers, the role assists in design and technical delivery of projects whilst keeping an operational focus. The role also involved mentoring and providing direction to the team.Over my time in this position, the team has built and delivered a number of key systems; we rolled out a new Citrix XenApp 7 Farm, a three tired Web Farm using IIS Reverse Proxies and F5 load balancing and are on track to retire approximately 90 Windows Server 2003 servers prior to the July end of support deadline.The operational landscape was complicated, and we aim to adhere strictly to IT Service Management best practices. As well as managing a fleet of over 600 servers, network attached storage and an on-premise DR environment; we provided the escalation point between the wider UWA IT Community and the University external datacentre provider. Working within extremely tight deadlines, this project team designed and delivered a centralised Active Directory for the University as well as Student and Staff file storage and Student Printing to support the University’s New Courses 2012 strategy.Following this, the project diverted its focus to risk management and took on the task of consolidating the University IT facilities to a single third party datacentre provider. The project team performed the negotiations with University stake-holders and the external provider and delivered a Private Cloud datacentre on the VMware vCloud platform.The team then coordinated with IT Service Management, Systems Administrators, Application Analysis and Business stake-holders to perform the migration of physical and virtual server fleet to the Private Cloud platform.Business Improvement Programme - Information ServicesMy role dealt specifically with the migration of the Windows Server fleet but I was also required to assist the external contractors on the team in their planning work, using my experience of the University, with advice and guidance.
