I coached young people, preparing them to be their best selves and their workplaces’ best employees.Employers in the District would love to hire DC residents, but have trouble finding applicants with the requisite education and skills. Meanwhile, young adults in the District would love to work for these companies, but have trouble getting even one foot in the door. Wouldn’t it be great if we could connect these two groups, for each other’s benefit? That, ultimately, was my job. In the classroom, I taught career readiness – résumés and cover letters, yes, but also the little things like handshakes and eye contact, diction and manners, punctuality and presentation. In the community, I connected with professionals whose businesses could benefit from the addition of well trained and well prepared young adults. I listened to employers’ needs, I integrated their ideas into my lesson plans, and I continued to support the students these employers chose to hire, even after the students left our doors.

My goal at WLC was to help steer the program as it adopted a new curriculum. To that end, I supported instructors, planned trainings, created schedules, coordinated volunteers, digitized attendance records, and - my favorite part of my time here - taught some extraordinary students.

Ordinarily, I taught reading, writing, and social studies, where I used Edgar Allen Poe short stories and Oscar Brown Jr. poems to punctuate drawn-out discussions of parts of speech or American history.The real fun came, surprisingly, when I got to teach students how to solve geometry problems, discuss the scientific method, or use the internet on PCs.
