Profile bio

About Bryce Fuller

I’m a research scientist in quantum computing. Formally trained as an engineer, my foundation in quantum computing was built by studying under complexity theorists. Lately, I’ve been thinking about hardware-aware fermion-to-qubit mapping algorithms. My time is split between carrying out large scale quantum hardware experiments, developing internal software to enable my team to do the same, and working with IBM Quantum’s product team to convert research capabilities into user-tested software.

Listed skills include Java, Strategic Planning, C/C++, Public Speaking, and 3 others.

Staff Research Scientist - Quantum Computing

Current
Ibm

New York, United States

My work consists of two major undertakings. I research and develop quantum algorithms for superconducting quantum processors, and I carry out and validate these novel techniques at scale on IBM's quantum hardware. As IBM progresses on its hardware roadmap, my team is responsible for pushing that hardware to its limit. My research has skewed toward pre-fault-tolerant algorithms with some exceptions. Recently, I am developing new techniques to realize large-scale 2D fermionic time-dynamics experiments and I am leading a collaboration to realize these hardware experiments.Large-scale quantum hardware demonstrations requires a set of diverse skills:- I develop internal tools for efficient and flexible experiment execution with low manual overhead- I refine frameworks to develop and run error-mitigated hardware experiments which enforce best practices, yielding experiments that are reproducible and resilient to transitory failures- I work directly with IBM Quantum’s product team to convert internal research capabilities into polished, user-tested software.

Quantum Computing Applications Researcher

Ibm

Greater New York City Area

As a QC applications researcher, I carried out joint research projects between IBM and its industry partners to evaluate how QC stood to impact computational problems which were core to each business. My peers and I at IBM supplied the quantum algorithms expertise, and our collaborators in industry supplied deep knowledge of the computational problems which were relevant to their organization. Together we uncovered and then addressed the practical engineering challenges which arose from considering that business' realistic problem instances. The result of these projects ranged from:- Providing clarity to the leadership of industry partners on the engineering challenges which stood between them and practically useful quantum algorithms for their use-cases.- Developing and implementing techniques to overcome these challenges, and demonstrating these on quantum hardware. At times, the reality was that some use-cases did not make sense to pursue with quantum algorithms, and I would say so to our industry partners. Ruling out the usefulness of quantum algorithms for certain applications benefits the whole industry by freeing us to focus on more promising problems.

Aug 2019 - Sep 2021

Undergraduate Researcher

Quantum Information Center

Ut Austin

Researched algorithms for embedding fully connected quantum circuits into circuits with arbitrary connectivity. Investigated the relationship between state complexity and entanglement structure via tensor network implementations.

May 2017 - Jun 2019

Computer Engineering Representative

University Of Texas At Austin

The ECE UAB is a board of 15 appointed undergraduates who report to the Dean of the Electrical and Computer engineering department and represent the interests of over 1500 Electrical and Computer engineering students. Within UAB, I lead the Academic Affairs committee where I worked closely with the ECE Department to represent student interests as the degree plan was being reformed.

May 2017 - May 2019

Peer Mentor

Austin, Texas Area

I served as the Peer Mentor for the inaugural offering of the Freshman Research Initiative's Quantum Computing Course. My role was similar to that of an undergraduate TA with emphasis on preparing students for research. Using my experience gained through QCI, I collaborate with the instructors and graduate TA on how to approach teaching quantum information to freshman students.

Jan 2018 - Dec 2018

Engineering Intern

Palo Alto, California

May 2018 - Aug 2018

Founding President

Austin, Texas Area

QCI was created in response to the lack of resources available for undergraduates interested in quantum information processing. We understand how consequential this new field will become and by making quantum computing accessible to younger students we hope to inspire a wave of bright minds to pursue a career in quantum information. QCI is lead by a board of self-taught officers who strive to understand and reformulate the core ideas of quantum computing in a way that undergraduate students are prepared to engage with. Weekly meetings center around foundational concepts within quantum information theory and build upon one another, working up to the analysis of quantum algorithms. We are thankful to the Quantum Information Center at UT Austin with whom we work closely to ensure the quality of our content.

Feb 2017 - Jan 2018

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Akinwande Nanotechnology Group

Austin, Texas Area

Initially I helped my advisor's research in studying silicene based devices. Once I had enough experience I began a project to fabricate and characterize JLTFT based transistors which utilized band-to-band tunneling effects. My work was largely independent and I was responsible for seeking help and guidance when I needed it.
