I work as a remote tutor for students who want to start learning programming from scratch. My particular focus is in teaching python to high-school age students.The first thing that I emphasize when teaching is to always encourage the student, and treat mistakes as learning opportunities or chances to emphasize common difficulty.I like to focus on having the student work through examples, and give small variations and changes to those examples to help them learn to think about the code not just in terms of learning the basics of a command, but also how to improvise applications for that command. Similarly, when explaining things, I ask my students to repeat parts of the lesson back to me in their own words to cement their understanding.
