About Bryn Jackson
Bryn Jackson is an artist and curator based in Indianapolis whose work centers nature and the built environment as a means of unpacking and connecting disparate narratives, personal experiences, and material culture. An interdisciplinarian whose practice focuses on ecological inequity and institutional critique through sculptural, digital, photographic and time-based media production, his work insists upon a more ethical and equitable stewardship of art, artists, our communities, our ecosystems, and our histories. Bryn received a BFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has exhibited his work in galleries, clubs, universities, and artist-run spaces in New York, Chicago, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Detroit, and Los Angeles. He has curated independently and at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, collaborating with dozens of artists and partner organizations to address issues of gender- and race-based violence and oppression and environmental injustice.Bryn’s artistic and curatorial work has been made possible through awards from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, Lilly Endowment Inc., Central Indiana Community Foundation, the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, the Herbert Simon Family Foundation, Arts Midwest, Big Car Collaborative, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. CurrentStep-Up, Inc. was founded in 2003 by two community members who saw the effects of HIV on their family, friends, and neighbors and decided to do something about it. Created in collaboration with filmmaker Jason Yamas, Not Me, Murphy is an experimental, feature-length film which grapples with the complexities of both queer sociosexuality and psycho-emotional instability. The film premiered at MIX NYC: New York Queer Experimental Film Festival in 2013.According to MIX:"Production has delivered stunning, mind-bending hallucinations...Shot on popular amateur medium, Super VHS, Not Me, Murphy feels as if we are watching some other family’s home movies, edited together with an avant-garde sensibility. The cuts are jumpy and disorienting while we overhear improvised conversation often vulgar, repetitive, or incomprehensible."
