I initially spent 2 years studying bioengineering at USU before learning that I enjoyed the theoretical and documentation side of advanced concepts like organic chemistry, biochemistry, mechanics, thermodynamics, and physics more than the actual computation side. I then switched my major to Technical Communication & Rhetoric and have not looked back. My favorite aspect of technical writing is getting to work with a variety of different concepts in a variety of different industries, and my experiences at USU have not disappointed. For the past few years, I have predominately been working with eye tracking software revamping some of USU's web pages through usability testing and working on improving program sustainability within CHASS. I have also spent some time learning about technical communication in the PC world while interviewing with a lead technical writer for AMD. We discussed how roughly 98% of their documentation is private, what processes and software they use to create and manage their documentation, AI integration with technical editing, as well as the challenges of maintaining an inter-company documentation portal under NDA. Having the opportunity to ask questions and learn about technical writing in the computer and semiconductor industries has prompted me to take a deeper dive and conduct research of my own. I’m currently co-authoring an academic manuscript on these topics and hope to submit for publication next year.
