I built a highly effective public policy department, and our team tackled an array of “unwinnable” situations. We used strategically-placed pressure to achieve victories that gave value to the organization’s mission and helped the bottom line, as donors are eager to hear how their support is bringing about tangible change. Grassroots organizing and a highly engaged volunteer corps, targeted media relations, and analysis/research were the keys to successful campaigns.

In 2010 I managed one of the two priority campaigns for the organization, which meant successfully directing a complex task and meeting very tight deadlines. Proposition B, the statewide citizens' campaign to enact the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act, gathered the required signatures in 14 weeks while simultaneously collecting high-quality signatures (81% validity rate). The campaign exceeded our signature-collection goal by 46%. I set up the campaign office; implemented strategy and procedures, project goals and a timeline; trained and managed staff, regional coordinators and about 3,000 volunteers; oversaw grassroots outreach; conducted volunteer training statewise; met with reporters and editorial boards.* Recognized by management for "Going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty."

Lobbied for a national charitable organization. Researched state laws, strategized to achieve a specific outcomes, drafted effective materials, built coalitions, and public speaking/advocacy. Advance preparation, stakeholder engagement and a thorough understanding of the legislative process translated to delivering 4 pieces of legislation to governors' desks and defending against more than 10 problematic bills.

Instructed college students in Business Law courses, including corporate ethics, stakeholder engagement, and employment law. I obtained an Adjunct Faculty Teaching Certificate, created a positive environment for learning, and routinely assessed the effectiveness of the curriculum.

Greater St. Louis Area

Managed the first statewide effort of its kind in Missouri, Proposition A to ban animal fighting for sport. With a budget of $1 million, we exceeded signature-gathering goals by 35%, qualified for the ballot, and received decisive approval from nearly 1 million voters.
