As Ivy grew, the original MVP codebase written with PHP became a hindrance. It was a monolith code, making maintenance and improvement difficult, and leaving vulnerable to security risks. Scaling was nearly impossible. We knew it was time for a change. So, I began consulting with the engineering manager, who is now the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), to collaborate on the strategic design and development of Ivy's envisioned SAAS platform.Original MVP was built as a monolith codebase in PHP. This was not only making it harder to maintain and almost impossible to improve, but also it had lots of security vulnerabilities, and scaling was not possible. We designed the system to have four systems: Frontend, API, Backend, and Database. Each works independently behind a private subnet and communicates via API only.As a developer myself, I recommended React for building scalable and efficient interfaces. With its component-based approach, React allows for easy reuse of code and faster development time. Also, its popularity in the tech community means there are plenty of resources and support available. On the Backend, we've decided to go with Python for its lightning-fast calculation abilities. Plus, as a business decision, if we need to bring on any new developers, finding skilled engineers is easy. API is to be built on NodeJs. By facilitating communication solely through the API, each system can be developed at its own pace, making maintenance a breeze. Plus, opting to use JavaScript for both the frontend and API is a smart business move.If you're dealing with a lot of timeseries data, you'll want a database that's specialized for the task. That's why I recommended using Timescale DB in the project. Its unique features make it a smart choice for any data-driven project.
