Brought in as the Interim CTO to perform a technology turnaround. Collaborated with a 4-member team to assess and report on the state of the WHS technology organization and presented findings to the WebMD board. As the interim CTO, took over product development, software security, and technology operations, driving the restructuring of leadership team while the search for a permanent CTO was underway. Worked with the product team to clarify the 2016 product roadmap and organized development to successfully deliver it on time when handing the reins over to the new CTO. Interviewed and assisted in hiring permanent CTO.Oversaw the development of a proposal to replace the aging, monolithic system with a contemporary services-based architecture, including a data lake implementation for analytics and reporting services. Delivered a security and compliance plan to remediate significant security issues and executed according to plan, bringing all systems into HIPAA compliance and on-track to pass Leviathan security audit.

Recruited to replace both the VP of Engineering and VP of Product after their departure. Managed 22 employees while performing the day-to-day functions including architecture reviews, feature prioritization, and decisions on 3rd-party technology solutions. Hired 2 technical product managers, an engineering manager, developers and IT staff. Along with CEO, managed company-wide budget of ~$12M.Improved productivity nearly 300% in 3 quarters, as measured by the features released to production, through process improvement initiatives and discipline to product definition. Bootstrapped the professional services team to support customization needs, resulting in the largest enterprise sale to date. Identified features that brought on new customers.

Brought in by the CTO to combine disparate HW teams into one cohesive department with a consistent development methodology. Reorganized isolated groups of hardware engineers into a well-integrated department with defined design, validation, testing and compliance processes. Eliminated redundant practices, promoted proposals to streamline hardware operations, while managing a team of up to 40 people.Streamlined operations by reducing field service requirements of Rubi, coffee kiosks, by 75%, cutting operating costs by over 50%. Drove rigorous selection process for vendor design partners as opposed to price driven selection model that proved more costly in long run, focusing on vendor/company relationship. Recruited to turnaround engineering organization and transformed the organization into a smoothly functioning team that produced software of known quality and on-time delivery. Managed up to 40 employees and $6.5M budget. In one year, more than doubled the size of the development team, hired and managed SDETs to automate QA processes, and introduced Agile/Scrum methodology. Drove customer satisfaction ratings from 1.5 to 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) within 6 months.Partnered with the Executive Team to develop an application to provide an auditing and analytics application. Hired and led team in developing an SOA-architected data governance application with a NoSQL backend. Supported the accumulation and processing of hundreds of millions of events per day, per product requirements. Also drove the organization towards the successful acquisition of Likewise by Isilon Systems, a subsidiary of EMC Corporation in 2012.

Founding member of Kiha Software, a company that provides a suite of software services for mobile devices, starting as VP and promoted to COO, reporting to CEO. Hired and managed a team of over 30 developers, program managers, QA, HR, and cloud operations staff, within first year, establishing all company processes and developing company’s prototype. As part of executive team, drove product’s vision, while managing a $12M budget.Led innovation and development of client-side software, running on a mobile phone, and supporting services that run in Kiha’s cloud-based datacenter (AWS). Subsequently, saved millions of dollars in hardware costs using AWS in early days of public cloud deployments and saved 25% in operations costs by automatically scaling up/down on demand.

Hand selected to lead Engineering temporarily when GM left, and then chosen for a permanent role to oversee engineering along with manufacturing, sales, marketing, and operations teams of over 50 internal employees and 100+ external vendors with a $96M budget. FlipStart is a pocket-sized Windows Vista PC and the first commercial product shipped by Vulcan Inc. Led the design, development, marketing and shipping of this Windows Vista computer in 19 months, taking product to market in April of 2007: see http://www.flipstart.com.DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING, FlipStart, 2002 - 2005 | PRINCIPAL ENGINEER 2003- 2004Promoted to lead the engineering team after first attempt to productize the FlipStart PC failed due to engineering design flaws. Implemented DFM (Designed For Manufacturing) standards and enforced strict development checkpoints for thermal and robustness standards. Also established a PM team to track/coordinate activities between groups and outsourced efforts. Developed an 18- month schedule with milestones. Completed the product development within 2 months of 18-month schedule. PRINCIPAL ENGINEER, FlipStart Software, 6/2003-12/2004Selected from the previous role as the Managing Principal Engineer for Broadband Initiative, after tripling performance of Digio’s set top box. Charged with leading team of 5 software engineers to develop MobileMail, software that integrates with Microsoft Outlook and allows selective download of email and attachments when the computer’s network connection is intermittent or slow.

Worked with Microsoft Architects and Program Managers to develop areas of technology that benefited both EMC and Microsoft (SQL Sever Group, Cluster Server Group, Filesystems Group). Researched and advised solutions for file system and device management issues. Developed technology to detect data corruption occurring anywhere in the IO stack, patent pending. Designed and implemented a kernel-mode driver to simulate an Ethernet connection, providing a failover network path through the EMC SAN in case of internet failure.

Developed custom device drivers, kernel-mode software, memory management libraries, and emulation software for the MISEM ultrasound machine. Served as the consulting expert for all Windows NT system-level software.

Implemented new features for SourceSafe, Microsoft’s source code control application. Added support for double-byte character sets; updated user interface for consistent look and feel; and wrote recursive algorithm to find errors in the proprietary database, fix the errors, and upgrade the database to a new format.
