Phd Candidate
In my PhD project I studied landscape genetics of a seagrass Zostera noltii in the Ria Formosa lagoon, building on my work in RiaScapeGen project.I am interested how a combination of dispersal traits of the seagrass propagules, hydrological descriptors of the lagoon and a set of habitat descriptors all shape genetic diversity of the population in an intertidal coastal lagoon. This work is based on the terrain data extracted from the DTM we developed earlier, hydrological transport modelling results obtained during the first year of my PhD and microsatellite-based genetic analysis of the samples.Along with my scientific skills this work requires organisational and management skills, as I was in charge of setting the timeline, preparing logistics and conducting the fieldwork, coordinating with the administrative services of my institution and the financing agency of my grant, establishing collaborations with partners, writing and coordinating additional project, presenting the results in the meetings and seminars, recruiting and training volunteers and supervising students.
Project Research Technician
For one year I worked as a project research technician on RiaScapeGen project. My tasks included GIS data processing, modelling DTM (Digital Terrain Model), managing field operations, equipment handling, sampling and sample processing, laboratory analysis (DNA extraction, PCR, genotyping), data management, landscape genetics study, work timeline planning, problem solving, recruiting and training the volunteers, delivering timely reports, meeting presentations. My work gave excellent results, even when few tasks were happening at the same time. In this period I carried out large proportion of extensive sampling planned in this project, collecting over 2.500 samples out of final 3.800. Sampling was done in intertidal areas of the coastal lagoon, for what in most cases I used the kayaks to reach the isolated areas. In collaboration with senior researchers on the project I produced DTM from the LiDAR data and used it to calibrate the hydrografical model of particle transport in the lagoon. This work provided new and exciting results on which I later continued working during my PhD project. I worked in coordination with two senior researchers and a principal investigator on the project Dr. Filipe Alberto.
Msc Marine Biodiversity And Conservation
My thesis work was divided in two projects. First project was focused on the recruitment of the invertebrate larvae in the seagrass meadows and was set in the Protected landscape area of Kamenjak, in Croatia. This project included work with local fishermen, and management body of the protected area. Later on I developed another similar project at IMEDEA Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies at Mallorca, with similar topic. Here I used fragmentation of habitat measures to define the effect of habitat integrity on community recruitment. In addition I analysed remote sensing data to estimate environmental factors driving the observed patterns.I organised the field campaign in Croatia and established collaborations with local experts, developed skills in negotiation and public communication, dealing with local fishermen, developed budget and allocated available resources. Thesis supervisor: Dr. Iris Hendriks and Dr. Ester Serrão. Thesis: “Effect Of Habitat Fragmentation On Bivalve Larvae Recruitment: Study of Pinna nobilis and Pectinidae species larvae”
Museum Educator
After one year of volunteering I passed the state exam and earned a professional qualification of Museum educator. In March 2008 I started working in the Natural History Museum Rijeka, and continued my activities as before with added responsibilities. In this period I was in charge of the management of the educational programs and public-related activities of the Museum. I continued participating int he collection management and research of other curators at the Museum and managed a project of my own.In more details, I substituted for Željka Modrić, on the following projects: - "School for Young Natural Scientists" (as projects' manager with Iva Tomljenović). Workshops are designed for 4th grade elementary students. School for Young Natural Scientists is envisioned as a modern supplement to a regular school program of "Biology and society" class in order to bridge the gap between the fast development of science and school programs limited by time and financial construction. Two hour workshops are held bimonthly in the Museum or on the field. Work with children is based on practical work, games and creative tasks. - "Museum's Friends Club": A club for children that have completed "School for Young Natural Scientists", as they continue their independent research of the nature world attending the monthly workshops in the Museum. - "Long Night of Museums": Annual, international event of open-doors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Night_of_Museums , http://nocmuzeja.hr/).- "Science Fair 2008" (http://www.festivalznanosti.hr/2008/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=62&Itemid=119)I created and managed the project "Seagrass Meadows of the Island of Krk", which resulted in the educational exhibition in the Museum.Professional title thesis “Educational game "Be a curator of a natural history museum for a day" as an example of pedagogical work in the Natural History Museum Rijeka”.
Volunteer Assistant Curator
As a volunteer I was actively participating in the activities of the Museum. One of my main duties was help with the educational programs, where I guided the tours through the whole Museum collection, held the workshops for visiting groups and participated in the Museum's educational projects "School for Young Natural Scientists", Night of the Museums, Science fair and Night of the bats. At the same time I was helping with the management of the Museum's databases, maintenance of the collections and preparations of the permanent and temporary exhibitions. As I was certified diver I participated in the projects of research of the benthic communities of the aquatorium of Susak island and the Srakane archipelago. I also helped a the geological, paleontological and the botanical fieldwork campaigns, collecting the samples for the collections or helping with the research and monitoring programmes of the curators. I participated on the following projects: - "School for Young Natural Scientists"- "Museum's Friends Club"- "Long Night of Museums" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Night_of_Museums , http://nocmuzeja.hr/)- "Science Fair 2007" (http://www.festivalznanosti.hr/2007/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=20&Itemid=64)
Student Job - Guide For The Collections
During 2006 I worked in the Croatian Natural History Museum in Zagreb. As a student, my job was to give guided tours through the Museum's Zoological collection to the visiting groups and individuals. During the rest of the working hours I was helping curators-educators if needed and was looking after the safety of the exhibits in the exposition and answered the questions of the visitors.
President Of The Management Board
Since I enrolled in the university I joined the Biology students association BIUS and have been actively participating in its work during all of my study years. I was a member of the management board for a year, afterwards its secretary for another year and then was voted a president. As the president of the management board I coordinated the work of the management board, chiefs of specialized sections and when needed, the University. I worked closely with other members of the board and active association members on development of the projects, collaborations with similar associations, NGOs, research institutions and relevant government bodies. I was in charge for the timely reporting to the financing bodies and partners. During my presidency BIUS held an annual fieldwork campaign in Nature Park Papuk and hosted the SymBioSE event - European biology students conference, for which I was the head of the organizing committee. BIUS was funded in 1999 by students of biology at the Science faculty of Zagreb University, and has since played an important role both in biology students education and integration in scientific environment, and in the nature protection in Croatia. The main objectives of the Association are encouraging and enhancing the cultural, entertainment, sporting, educational and research activities of students; evaluation, conservation and protection of nature and biodiversity through sustainable development and contribute to the establishment of a modern, liberal, democratic, pluralistic and tolerant, non-violent society respecting different opinions, thoughts and ideas, freedom of choice, independence of the work, the public and democratic opinion and responsibility of the individual and organizations. Each year one major event in form of the fieldwork-educational campaign is organised by one of the members with the support of the management board and other students.http://www.bius.hr/
