Michael Busch is a Member and Lucene committer at The Apache Software Foundation. He possess expertise in lucene, open source, apache, java, information retrieval and 12 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "It has been a privilege knowing and working with Michael at Twitter. He is truly a 10x engineer who is capable of inspiring and lifting the performance of people around him. He has almost single-handedly built the core of Earlybird - Twitter's realtime search engine. During the time I worked with him, I learnt a lot about building high performance systems. Outside of work, he is a genuinely kind and warm person. It has been a joy to work with him and I really look forward to our future collaboration whenever that might be.", "After reading Michael's other recommendations, it's hard to think of something to add that hasn't already been said. He's among the brightest people I know, and applies himself with dedication and tenacity to the most difficult problems, until he's solved them. His solutions are straightforward, correct, and complete. As has been said, he's one of the most agreeable and positive souls you could hope to meet. It's been a pleasure to work with him, and I would recommend him highly for any software position.", and "Michael is one of the best engineers I have had the pleasure to work with. Innovative, extremely motivated, makes very complicated designs appear simple, with easy to read, solid, performant code. His continued contributions to Lucene simplify, make extensible, increase possibilities.... And he is a heck of a nice guy, great to work with!"

Member And Lucene CommitterThe Apache Software Foundation Dec 2006 - PresentWilmington, Delaware, UsI'm an active committer on the Lucene Java project and am currently working on realtime search. I also frequently present at ApacheCon conferences. I'm member at Apache since January 2011.My contributions to Lucene in the past include:- Payloads (ability to store metadata inline in posting lists)- Search performance improvements (lazy seeks on term positions, multi-level skipping on posting lists, term dictionary cache, etc)- A new, flexible, attribute-based TokenStream API- IndexReader reopen functionality- New, flexible QueryParser framework -

Software Engineer And ArchitectIbm Oct 2008 - Feb 2010Armonk, New York, Ny, UsI was the backend architect for the IBM eDiscovery Analyzer product, primarily focusing on indexing, search and scale-out.The team I worked in is spread across the entire world and we also worked closely with IBM research. Besides our reputation of innovating new cool features ourselves we had also been very successful in incorporating new research technologies into shippable products in the past. I also designed and implemented reusable components that were shared internally with other enterprise search products and/or with Lucene. -

Assistant ScientistDlr Aug 2000 - Sep 2000Koeln / Cologne, DeIn my second internship at he DLR I developed a system for automatically adjusting the amperages of 10x10 VCSEL laser arrays. It consisted of a mainboard with 14 expansion slots for circuit boards that could each precisely control the amperages for 8 lasers. My work consisted of planning the entire system, board design and manual assembly of a prototype board. I also created an electronic version of the board design to be used to manufacture the circuit boards with milling machines. Before the internship ended I received the 14 circuit boards and the mainboard and assembled the system. I verified that the hardware worked as designed and started developing the necessary control software in LabVIEW. Before I left he DLR I handed my work over to a colleague who continued the software work. -
Assistant ScientistGerman Aerospace Center (Dlr) Feb 2000 - Mar 2000Koeln / Cologne, DeI worked in a group that researched the coherent coupling of vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser arrays (VCSEL). The goal was to couple multiple VCSELs coherently, so that the resulting laser beam had the maximum power density. A system to measure the power density to evaluate the quality of the coupling had to be developed.During my internship I evaluated and finally purchased high quality microstepping motors. I implemented software for controlling these motors using National Instruments LabVIEW. The goal of the program was to perform a precise scan of the laser beam. It automatically determined the measurable area of the beam and performed the scan automatically, while dynamically adjusting the step size in order to get higher resolutions in "interesting areas". As a result the program generated a 3D profile of the scanned laser beam, which had a significantly higher dynamic range compared to results produced by previous approaches. -
InternStadt Olsberg Apr 1999 - Sep 1999While still in high school, I developed an election results presentationprogram for the Kommunalwahlen 1999 in Olsberg, Germany. The software was used on the election day at the official event in the town-hall, presenting results to hundreds of people. The program ran on 7 different machines in a network. Two projectors presented the results; one showed presentations with charts, visual and sound effects for each electoral district, the other one displayed tables summarizing all results in real time.I could control the entire system, such as scheduling the different presentations, from my PC.On three other computers the audience could use an interactive map to watch presentations from the different districts again. Links for the districts appeared on the map as soon as the corresponding results were available. The biggest challenge for me was to develop this network-based system on two computers at home without having any network programming experience.
