Through a perpetual cycle of studying, practicing, and teaching, my experiences have shaped me into a learner, fighter, and leader. My five years studying honours physiology at UBC was enriched with learning. The coursework formed the basis of my knowledge for my degree, but the most illuminating experiences stemmed the inspirational people I was fortunate to work with, exposing me to the field of health research. Under the guidance of my mentor in a research mentorship program, our project developed a pipeline to model SARS-CoV-2 interactions in animals, where we placed first in a research conference. My first work experience in research was a co-op position involving hands on experience on lab techniques to monitor the population dynamics of fish in the interior regions of British Columbia. To conclude my honours undergraduate degree in physiology, I engaged in a thesis project to test a functional assay for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) linked genes to which I presented in front of a committee. This experience has immersed me in health research, enabling me to attend defenses, network with likeminded individuals, and learn about novel research through seminars for further understanding of the field. From 15 years of karate, I am a fighter; not in the literal sense, but as someone whose character is built upon resilience. After the constant training, countless tournaments, and demonstrations of spirit, I am incredibly grateful to be part of the provincial team and represent British Columbia in nationals. I specialize in team kata, something not far from synchronized swimming but using karate techniques. Not to mention, I am currently training to run a marathon after completing half marathons and numerous races, convincing myself that I am capable of achieving difficult tasks. I use the power of my voice to lead, to connect, and to contribute to my community. Toastmasters has helped me channel my anxiety to confidence towards public speaking, where I competed in speech contests at the club, area, and district level. Equipped with these tools, I foster an inclusive community as the Vice President of Membership in our toastmasters club, interact and connect with seniors to improve their well-being at an adult day centre, and orchestrate the largest piano music festival in Coquitlam.Overall, this perpetual cycle of studying, practicing, and teaching speaks to my commitment to my activities, as I believe these are lifelong skills.
