David Shin is a legal executive with over 20 years’ experience with public and high-growth private companies, as well as global law firms. He is currently Vice President of Legal - Technology Transformation & Innovation at HCA Healthcare (NYSE: HCA), the largest healthcare system in the U.S. with annual revenue of over $64 billion. In David’s role he brings his legal expertise and background to support and develop strategy around HCA’s transformation of patient care and operations by leveraging AI, cloud enabled services and software, and doing so responsibly within solid data and AI governance frameworks. He also serves as Co-Chair of HCA’s Responsible AI Steering Committee.  David began his legal career in private practice focusing on corporate, securities and M&A with DLA Piper and Mayer Brown. Over the last twelve years, David’s career focused on digital health and Software as a Service (SaaS), including serving as Chief Counsel of Software, Cloud and AI and Chief Privacy Officer at Varian (formerly, NYSE: VAR), an oncology medical device company since acquired by Siemens in 2021 for ~$16B. Most recently, David served as Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary of a venture-backed startup in the health data interoperability space. David earned his B.A. in Politics from Occidental College and his J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School. He is Co-Chair of the Data Privacy and Security Committee for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. He also serves on the board of Visual Communications, a 501(c)(3) and annual host of the L.A. Asian Pacific Film Festival. Early in his in-house legal career, David was awarded “Deal Maker of the Year” by the Association of Corporate Counsel for driving inorganic growth at an enterprise software company backed by Vista Equity.
