About Christopher Fan
As a recent University of Connecticut graduate with a B.S. in Environmental Science, I am deeply committed to identifying practical solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. I have a wide variety of interests that I plan to pursue such as conservation, coastal ecology, sustainability, and geospatial analysis. During my REU experience in the Harris Lab, I compared the accuracy of low-cost tilt meter water velocity readings to acoustic Doppler current profilers in a mesohaline system. Additionally, I collected and analyzed water velocity and quality data at a restored oyster reef and presented my findings at the 2024 Maryland Sea Grant REU Symposium. This experience improved my writing, fieldwork, lab, and data analysis skills. I also had an amazing opportunity to research salt marsh vulnerability with Mass Audubon where I was selected to present my research at the New England Estuarine Research Society in the Fall of 2022. Furthermore, I conducted invasive species surveys on a greenway trail with the Neponset River Watershed Association. I am always looking for new opportunities that combine my passions in research, climate change, geospatial analysis, and environmental management while also expanding my knowledge of the environmental field.

Christopher Fan work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
As an undergraduate research assistant in the Landscape Biogeochemistry Lab, I analyzed gas fluxes in coastal marshes. Using R, I created detailed plots illustrating long-term temporal trends of greenhouse gases and porewater chemistry under current conditions without management interventions. This work serves as a baseline for future lab studies exploring the impacts of various salt marsh management strategies, enabling comparisons to assess the effectiveness of management strategies.
Reu Research Fellow
Conducted a comprehensive research project in the Harris Lab, focusing on the accuracy comparison between cost-effective tilt meter water velocity readings and the widely used, more expensive acoustic Doppler current profilers within a mesohaline system. Collected and analyzed water velocity and quality data at a restored oyster reef, exploring the intricate relationship between these parameters. Gained valuable lab skills including water quality sonde calibration and water sample filtering. Acquired extensive fieldwork experience in collecting water samples, measuring light attenuation, and gathering water quality data. Presented findings through a scientific poster at the 2024 Maryland Sea Grant REU Symposium.
Greenway And River Access Intern
Created and conducted comprehensive surveys of invasive plant species along the Neponset Greenway Trail using ArcGIS, contributing to the understanding and management of environmental threats, while also assisting in surveys to assess public usage patterns and preferences, providing valuable insights for future greenspace development. Actively engaged in community meetings to foster meaningful dialogue and build connections with local neighborhood associations, incorporating diverse perspectives into environmental planning initiatives to improve access to greenway spaces.
Massachusetts Climate Corps Member
Continued a comprehensive research plan investigating the vulnerability of three salt marshes on the Northeast coast of Massachusetts using Mass Audubon’s Salt Marsh Science protocol, contributing to the addition of extensive vegetation and health data, and showcasing research findings at Mass Audubon’s Early Careers Program symposium.
Coastal Resilience Intern
Executed an in-depth research plan to investigate the vulnerability of salt marshes at Mass Audubon’s Rough Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary, utilizing observational surveys, transects to identify vegetation cover, and ArcGIS for comprehensive data collection and employing statistical methods such as ANOVAs for thorough analysis. I was then selected to present the detailed research findings at the New England Estuarine Research Society, demonstrating experience in environmental research and effective communication skills.
Teaching Assistant
Provided individualized academic support to students in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, fostering a positive learning atmosphere by promoting a growth mindset and emphasizing hard work. Demonstrated strong time management and organizational skills in handling multiple assignments and grading responsibilities.
Junior Umpire
Impartially enforced rules and regulations as a junior umpire, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all participants. Developed strong communication and conflict-resolution skills through effective interactions with players, coaches, and other umpires. Exhibited a strong work ethic, adaptability to changing game situations, and a commitment to promoting sportsmanship and fair play.
