As an undergraduate research assistant, I collaborated with a graduate student on her biophysics research in the physics department at the University of Washington. The research aimed to better characterize the Type Six Secretion System (T6SS) a bacterial toxin delivery system common among bacteria. In particular, the research focused on the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa as a model organism to investigate the T6SS. The T6SS acts as a syringe-like device, puncturing the cell wall of recipient bacteria, and secreting proteins which promote cell death. P. aeruginosa is a bacteria prevalent in patients with chronic lung infections. Characterizing the T6SS could provide insight into combating these infections. The T6SS becomes active in two ways: in the presence of competing bacterial species, and through the deletion of specific genes. We conducted different experiments with P. aeruginosa where different genes were deleted, and other competing bacterial species were added. In order to better understand the T6SS, we highlighted specific proteins of interest in the cultures of P. aeruginosa to quantitatively/statistically investigate and understand how P. aeruginosa competes with other bacteria. • Independently conducted experiments with different strains of the bacteria• Applied statistical methods to analyze and characterize large data sets, specifically in Matlab• Expanded upon existing data processing code to better sort through usable and unusable data• Built new data analysis code which allowed for easier statistical analysis of data• Developed and collected data on my own research topic on the T6SS
