I am a 23-year-old, graduate Building Surveyor at Hollis in Glasgow. Since high school, I have had a strong interest in a career in building surveying. I modelled my high school courses in my 5th and 6th year to enter the university course. In the 3rd year of my honours degree, I was the award winner for best performing student after receiving 6 A’s and in 4th year took on a mentoring role for new 1st year building surveying students. From the age of 15, I worked in my parent’s busy café in Maryhill called Jaconellis Café. During this time, I moved from dishwasher to an assistant manager dealing with; money, contacting suppliers, some challenging customers and training staff younger and older which I believe has given me a helpful and reliable personality.Following my 3rd year at university, I was successful in gaining a full-time placement with the building consultancy firm Hollis from May to September of 2022. This gave me the opportunity to enhance my knowledge from university with real-world experience prior to graduating. To gain the placement I was required to do a 15-minute interview with 2 employees, a 10-minute presentation on a building of my choice, and a test to spot building defects within images. After a successful interview, I gained more experience than I could have ever expected. I gained project manager experience by undertaking valuations, creating snagging lists and joining progress meetings. I created reports for Residential, Industrial and commercial RCA’s up to £50 million for companies such as M&G. I gained Technical Due Diligence experience by writing sections of reports including building defects, condition surveys, pre-acquisition survey sand vendor reports on buildings such as East Kilbride Shopping Center and Howdens. I assisted an NEC Supervisor in aiding the building fabric repairs at Glasgow University. I have written Tender Reports and attended meetings with the Scottish Director for Dentons, interviewing potential contractors for a new office fit-out in Haymarket, Edinburgh. I have undertaken PPM Surveys such as the Cineworld building in Glasgow. I have created an SoC for a tenant prior to the commencement of a lease of an industrial unit. I have undertaken dilapidations and have had experience with a Scott Schedule for commercial and retail units.
