As a retail assistant, I am responsible for not only delivering great service with passion, but also with developing rapport with customers, and placing them before myself. Undertaken as a summer job at my local farm, Home Farm Nacton provided me with many new experiences and insights into different working environments. Despite not having any prior experience or background, I found it easy to adapt and fit in to this new environment, and was quickly able to pickup a wide range of skills ranging from teamwork to adaptability and independence. Within this role, I found myself completing many different tasks, covering manual tasks such as onion grading, sowing, and weeding, and technical tasks such as irrigation and vehicle operating. I learnt how to utilise vehicles such as Case and John Deere tractors, forklifts, and numerous trailer types. My hard work ultimately materialised when I was trusted with leading a team of manual workers on my own field, pioneering the sowing of the next years’ crop. This brought together both my independence and my teamwork, in order to function effectively as both a member and a leader.

Whilst working in this role I fundamentally strengthened my core team skills, consisting largely of support and communicative abilities. As my first part-time job in which I worked within a team, I quickly learnt what the ideal team member was like, and enveloped this within my own work practices, such as by being flexible, approachable, and able to use my own and others' initiatives.As a customer-oriented job, my time at Sainsbury's consisted mostly of keeping the café section clean and welcoming, dealing with customer queries and negotiating issues, and ultimately in delivering the best customer experience I could. My success in this area led to me being prompted to be trained in other areas of the store, such as the bakery, which consequently opened up many new opportunities, and helped to develop my team skills and cognitive functions even further.

Upon reaching the minimum working age, I took it upon myself to find a relatively simple part-time job. As a newspaper deliverer, I cycled a specific route every day, dropping off newspapers at select addresses, and directing customer queries towards management.The job has taught me punctuality, task management, communication, and several other core skills that have undeniably crafted me into the person I am today. Many of these skills apply outside of the working environment, for which I am very thankful for - as my first ever job, it has had surprisingly long-lasting effects on my motivation and attitude moving forwards.
